The State Government plans to upgrade the Sydney Trains CCTV contract over the next 12 to 18 months, which will include an increase in coverage and use of security cameras.
Through a tender process, the NSW Transport Ministry will be selecting industry experts who it will work with to leverage the latest technology and improve the surveillance network it currently has, said Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian (pictured).
The Ministry’s priority is to ensure the safety of its customers, emphasised Berejiklian.
Besides expanding the current coverage, the tender looks to upgrade the network to high definition, and assess the use of sensor detection technology that can alert officers on duty of trespassing, graffiti and other crimes.
According to Howard Collins, Sydney Trains’ Chief Executive, the current surveillance system has proven to be successful in crime investigation.
With the help of Police Transport Command, the video recording has enabled over 3900 arrests and 7400 charges since the network was established in May 2012.
Collins added that the surveillance coverage will be extended to include buses, light rail and ferries.
