As a Korean American, I eat a lot of Korean food and I would definitely say Don's Bogam is one of my favorite Korean restaurants in NYC.

Their kalbi is just okay (a bit too sweet), so I would recommend getting their prime deungshim (it's a prime ribeye) or their bulgogi which is made with thinly-sliced beef, glass noodles and broth. Their haemul dolsot bibimbap is the best! It's super spicy and it's very hard to find good haemul dolsot bibimbap since most restaurants just sell normal dolsot bibimbap. The number of side dishes is also decent.

The price is  comparable to that of other Korean bbq restaurants. Don's Bogam provides a Westernized experience of Korean food which is interesting, but the food is authentically Korean. As for the service and staff, they're just okay and nothing particularly note-worthy.

This place looks trendy from the outside so I wouldn't have expected tasty good Korean BBQ!

    What we ordered

    -  galbi
    -  bugogi bibimbap
    -  seafood pajeon
    -  nakji bokem (spicy octopus)
    -  lemon soju

    What we liked
    -  savory dishes and high quality overall

    -  trendy space
    -  didn't come out with BBQ smell

    What we disliked
    -  PRICE! Pretty expensive compare to other Korean restaurant

Really want to give 4 stars for the food but the service brought it down one star. The food is a little pricey but hey you often get what you pay for. It was a special occasion and we wanted good Korean BBQ. We had the spring rolls, seafood pancake, clear noodles as appetizers. The spring rolls were cooked to a perfect crisp and had a lot of flavor. The short ribs and skirt steak melted in our mouths--so tender. We also split the spicy pork bibhop with egg. Everything was delicious.

Now for the service: there was some miscommunication issue. When we ordered, the waiter misunderstood us and gave an extra entree something with meat and noodles, which was $40. It hadn't been cooked yet and we didn't order it. However, they insisted that we ordered it and that they could not use the meat on a different order because they cut it already. Then at some point the waiter moved one of my dishes and said in an inpatient tone that I had to keep my dishes to the side because we had to make room for incoming food.

Korean food packaged for non-Korean folk.  This means reduced menu selection whittled down to some of the easier items - in other words BBQ in all shapes and forms.

Nothing wrong with this of course as anything that makes a cuisine more accessible to the masses is all good and for the most part this place stays true to the original without going too deep into compromised fusion nonsense.

Not quite sure what to do with certain variations like red wine marinated selections as opposed to traditional sauce but hey can't fault them for trying.

Overall, it is a good experience for noobs and service is impeccable but over the longer term this place may get boring for those folks who may want to try some of the more hard core/challenging dishes.

I went to Don's Bogam on St. Patrick's Day with some friends, assuming it might be less crowded and crazy than anywhere else in NYC that day. We were both right and wrong...and definitely needed a reservation, especially for one of the cool BBQ tables.

We shared the Pork Dumplings (Fried) and they were so good...more like little savory pie pockets. And then for dinner I got the Marinated Chicken Bibimbap, which was awesome. I didn't try the BBQ, but two of my friends ordered steak and tuna. I was happily surprised that they didn't have to cook it themselves and that the staff helped with that. I don't cook for a reason.

The staff was friendly, but just a little slow for such a busy night. And though the little BBQ tables are fun with their sunken foot area, they are impossible to get in and out of easily.

When I lived in NYC 5 years ago, Don's was my favorite Korean BBQ of all time.  Its delectable meat platters and marinades were unparalleled, and you never left feeling any shred of doubt that you had enjoyed the highest quality bbq experience.

The other night felt different--while the meat quality was still high, $78 for a platter for two people seemed awfully expensive, and the banchan wasn't as plentiful as I remembered.

I sadly downgrade Don's and hope that my next experience here, whenever it may be, will prove this review wrong.

After plans/reservations at Artisinal fell through, my husband and I were left starving and wandering the streets of Manhattan at 9:30 on Valentine's night.  Luckily, we walked past Don's Bogam and saw empty tables and so, out of desperation, these became our V-day plans.

Luckily, it all worked out ok!  They were able to seat us at a regular (not BBQ) table.  The atmosphere here was much better than some of the other area BBQ places.

We started with the Kimchi pancake which was delicious.  For dinner, my husband ordered the dubu kimchi which was super tasty and I ordered the Galbi Bimbimbap which was hands down the best bimbimbap I have ever had.  The leftovers the next day were even better. :)

    Service was friendly and helpful.

Both hubby and I are thinking of abandoning our go to place and making Don's Bogam our new Korean BBQ spot.  A lucky date night after all.

The steak sampler BBQ was very good.

I think the skirt steak was actually the best of the 5 meats that come with the sampler.

Service was great, server does the BBQing for you.  Very friendly.  I'm not Korean.

    Good kimchi as well.

So I came here yesterday because my cousin from Texas was in town.  In the mood for Korean BBQ, I mentioned a few places and let her pick, which led us here.

This was my second time at Don's and both times the food was excellent.  I've always felt that Korean food is all about the small dishes and this place does not fail in that aspect.  They provide a nice variety of dishes (my favorites are the dried squid (or at least I think it is squid) and egg casserole-y thing) and are pretty good with the service so you do not constantly have to ask for refills.

We got the BBQ for two (there are several options of that, we got the first one) and my wife had a vegetarian variety of bibimbap.  The BBQ spot on, the bibimbap not so much.  The ambiance is trendy and yet has some traditional charm.  If you sit in the back they have what I assume is called recessed seating which feels a bit more old fashion.  The service is prompt and friendly.  The price is a bit high.

In short, this place is good.  It is pricey but worth the visit.

Nice classy place in K-town. Its not your typical pop culture spot in K-town but definitely a bit more on the relaxed, classy side. The decor is very modern and dim. The food here is very good. I am very impressed with the quality of the Korean BBQ. I'm usually one who likes marinated and saucy food, but I was very satisfied by the unmarinated and unseasoned beef they served. You'll get a quality cut and worth the price that you pay. Korean BBQ places to me usually seem casual, a family or friend event, but you can actually go to Don's Bogam for a more upscale, classier, and more modern setting. WIth that said, I felt super bad coming here with a party of 16 celebrating my father's birthday. Luckily, it was the night of the Super Bowl, so there were less people for my family to distract.

If you're going to get Korean BBQ, definitely go for their prime rib. It is super delicious! If you're picky or indecisive, you can definitely trust the servers' suggestions. Whatever you do, don't get the seafood bokkeum. It was overcooked and it wasn't as delicious as I thought it would be.

On the flip side, I wish the service was better. All the servers were very friendly, but it seemed like they were "allowed" to do many things. They were not able to turn on the back light for my family because they wanted to keep the ambiance of the restaurant   - well that's fine, wont ague with that. I do wish they would at least let the servers help us cut the birthday cake after spending $1000+ on dinner. What a shame..... it could have been the perfect birthday dinner.

One of the nicer and higher-end looking Korean BBQs I've ever been to. I was intrigued when my friend told me it was also a wine bar. What? Two of my favorite things all under one roof?! Yay!

It was very packed at 8:30pm on a Friday night as to be expected in K-town. Luckily we had made reservations the night before and we were seated promptly. The restaurant is fairly large and the service here was thankfully top-notch. Most times we had two servers coming by for the grill, for refills, extra orders, etc. Our servers even asked if anyone was gluten-free. We were VERY surprised because we eat out often and haven't heard anyone ask that before.

The food here was really good and probably one of the best we've had in awhile. We had the kimchi pancake, marinated beef, pork belly, spicy pork bibimbap, and a soybean paste stew with vegetables and tofu. Everything was so delicious! The prices aren't cheap though, but you definitely get what you pay for!

For a restaurant this size, they could have added 1-2 more bathrooms.... 3 just isn't enough. There always seemed to be a line to the bathroom.

In the end, I never ordered any wine. While they had more variety of wine than your typical Korean establishment, I wasn't too crazy about the list. The wine bar is at the very front of the restaurant right when you walk in. Maybe I'll try it next time as I'm waiting for a table.

I went to one Korean BBQ prior to this one and was disappointed so I never went to another Korean BBQ up until a few years later for some ones birthday party. WOW!!!.... This place was amazing. The meat is so tender. The Kim CHI was delicious. I do not even know the name of the food we had but everything was better then the next.  The décor is nice. everything was just full of flavor and amazing. MUST GO.  I suggest going during the week if possible because it is a bit hectic here during the weekend.

Great Korean bbq and attentive service. Can get busy, but it's off the main ktown block - so the wait is always less than 10 mins. Is on the expensive side. Around $30pp.

I was a bit out of it from a load of day drinking during the football playoffs, and after proving myself utterly worthless at Escape The Room a block away, I was looking forward to chowing down and eating something besides the pizza and chips I had loaded up on the rest of the day. Sunday night wasn't terribly busy, although I get the sense that if you have a large party and want a table with the BBQ ranges, you'll probably want to make a reservation ahead of time. Also clarify if you are going to be using the BBQ burners at all - if not, they may want to move you (in the end, it wasn't super-crowded, so they let us stay). The tables almost look like Japanese-style low tables, but they have space beneath the table for you to put your legs - so it's like sitting on a ledge while eating.

While Don's Bogam pitches itself as a wine bar, I wasn't necessarily blown away by the selection - if anything, it definitely has more wine than your average Korean restaurant, but it's not that it seemed to be more distinguished than, say, your average Italian restaurant. As for the food, it was very enjoyable overall. I went with a bulgogi bibimbap that had very flavorful beef (albeit a tad dry), crisped rice that added some nice texture, and a good heaping of basil that added another layer of flavoring. My wife went with the spiced pork, which was very succulent and not too spicy despite the description. The japchae was executed really well, with the noodles cooked perfectly (not too much and not too little - just the perfect amount of greasiness, given the slippery nature of the dish) and plenty hearty even without meat. All of the typical pre-meal bites were delicious as well.

The menu here is so big that unless you go family style, you're going to have difficulty trying everything. I'd definitely like to give a try to their BBQ meats next time, and given it's not in the heart of K-Town (32nd between 5th and 6th), I feel like I'll be able to do so without as much trouble as I might have otherwise soon enough.

This was the first time I had Korean BBQ and I couldn't believe what I was missing out on all my life. My friend and I had the meat platter for two and it gave us a chance to sample the different cuts of meat. The meat was high quality and they all tasted so delicious so it was hard to have a favorite. Since this was my first time experiencing Korean BBQ, I liked that the server cooked the meat for us. ( I know some other places let the patrons do it themselves) The side dishes were all tasty and the server was very quick to refill as soon as we finished one.  I can't wait to come back to this restaurant and bring my friends!

This was a very pleasant surprise.

I've been eating Korean food for decades, but like most Americans, I usually stick to the more 'accessible' fare. BBQ, bibimbap, pancakes, y'know, easy stuff. But my normal standby in NYC (Won Jo) seems to have gone downhill over the years although still popular. So been eating at different places.

Heard about Don's Bogam for a while so was interested in trying it out.

Situated across 5th Ave and away from the 5th/6th Avenue nexus of Koreatown, we were lucky to hit it at a slow time (Sunday night before 8) so were seated immediately at a most unusual arrangement of raised platform, leg less seats, but open area under the tables for feet. A bit awkward but no big deal.

The service was great. Attentive, smiling and pretty psychic with the banchan which was fine! The waitress basically cooked and served. The other helpers always checked if we needed anything.

Oh yeah. The food. Started out with Jap Chae which was great. Usually the clear noodles are pretty bland and uninviting. Here, although listed as an appetizer the portion was generous and it was delicious. The gravy was full bodied, the veggies mixed with the noodles so tasty! For such a normally simple dish it was warm and filling.

I have to say that next we had the Kalbi which wasn't as successful. It was the 'marinated' but not spicy variety but I felt it pretty bland. I like my Kalbi sweet. Meat was fine, but one of the reasons I don't like Won Jo is that they seem not to bother really marinating their meat. Perhaps I should have ordered the spicy?

But, the topper of the meal was the amazing Bulgoki. Normally I'm shoved a plate of raw meat and grill it. This dish came out looking like Chinese hot pot with some balls of the meat surrounding uncooked veggies and noodles and lying in liquid. Well, as it cooked the ingredients melded harmoniously and reduced into a delicious 'stew'. The meat melted in your mouth and the other stuff was like icing on the cake. Fantastic!  I could just spoon the liquid into my mouth for dessert!

The reasons I only give 4 stars was the slightly bland Kalbi, and also the prices on the very nice website had not been updated to the present menu. Yeah, it's pricier than most of the restaurants in the area, and much more than in Queens, but heck, I've eaten at places many times the price and not enjoyed it so much. The service, the comfortable atmosphere, and the kimchi, which while not that spicy, had a delicious undertone of flavor, make Don's a standout in the area. Glad I chose this place to celebrate my birthday. Will be back many times in the future. In fact, going to recommend this place for my old workgroup get together. See, any excuse is a good excuse!

Certainly a nicer looking, cleaner and better ventilated option in Koreatown.  But be careful.  Come here with somebody who is Korean, otherwise you may be subject to a degree of rudeness, and/or smaller portions for your barbecue orders.

That being said, the bulbogi with jap chae, the galbi (marinated short rib), and the basil bibimbap are amazing.

I just won't often feel like dealing with the attitude of the nicely dressed waitresses and hostesses here.  It's a shame, because I would love to come here for more occasions and add it to the regular K-town rotation.

We brought my brother here when we were visiting (he lives in NYC and we don't). It was a great place to bring out of towners (I know... I'm all backwards...) because the food is so good and they have cooktop tables.

Really, ask for a table with a grill. It's a lot of fun plus those tables are uniquely situated. We got the idea for Don's from a Korean friend. It's utterly reassuring when you go to a Korean restaurant and it's filled with Korean people on the recommendation of a Korean friend. You know this is going to be authentic and good.

We ordered a ton of beef cuts, soju, and some beers. They bring you amazing pickled delights prior to your meal. Seriously, try them all. You might find some new favorites. They will set up your grill and guide you to cooking your food to the needed temp (medium, well, etc).

We had a tasty and fun dinner catching up with my little brother. I recommend trying the Soju... it's somewhere between vodka and sake... very refreshing and good.

They don't take reservations on parties under 4, FYI and .... this was my only disappointment... they don't serve desert!

But go there, try it and then bring all of your out of town friends. :)

This is a high end KBBQ if I have ever gone to any because I'm very used to eating all-you-can-eat and cooking the meat myself and also it's on the Michelin guide. This restaurant is very service oriented and prepares high quality meat. Delicious food but on the heavy pricey side.

As I said I sort of mentioned, the waiter cooks everything for you, for he/she is the Grill Master!! It's always good to start out with anything non-marinated first then on to some marinated. To be honest though, I really like the non-marinated meat a lot more because I'm able to taste the meat quality more and the flavor is not so overwhelming. The only marinated meat I enjoyed was the Bulgogi. Wow the bulgogi was delicious, the sauce was so savory that my colleague decided to drink it like soup.

It's unlikely that I would return here often because of the price, but it was a good experience.

I think this place was decent. I'd rate it a 3.5 to be honest, but what the heck, I'll round up :)

Super nice and modern venue. Unless the restaurant is an extremely well-known place  though it compromises its appearance, I admit that I judge restaurants' exterior and interior before and after I walk into the place. I approve of Don's Bogam's exterior and interior appearance and layout.

I came here with my mom for lunch earlier today because a friend of hers she met on the street said that she had just eaten lunch at Don's Bogam and she had a nice meal at a clean and modern place.

I think the staff was friendly and I liked how there was a diversity in the restaurant. Sometimes there are Korean restaurants that are definitely 80% or even 90% Korean and I'm not a huge fan of that sort of environment because I feel like foreigners would feel a little reluctant to choose that restaurant. I don't know if it was the time of day, but the diversity of people was across a fairly wide spectrum.

Food: My mom ordered the Godeunguh (Korean mackerel) and Jjigae (she chose the soft tofu stew) lunch special, and i ordered the Galbi (marinated beef short ribs) and Nengmyun (cold buckwheat noodle dish). They weren't anything to DIE for, but all in all, I can say that we had a satisfactory lunch. The side dishes were okay, but not the best. I've seen and tasted better.

My friend who lives in the city said that the Yook-hweh (raw ground beef with seasoned spices/sauces) and the meat that you can grill there are the best at Don's Bogam, so for any future go-ers to this restaurant, maybe you can get those two dishes as well! :)

    Bon appétit!

Korean BBQ spot - they have a number of house recipes and they are a service-oriented restaurant. There's an upper area with BBQ seating that's a bit tough to get into - recessed foot areas and sliding chairs (just the top half). Small bar up front.

Servers bring drinks and individual servings of sauces and a group set of lettuce leaves for the BBQ. They cook it for you and distribute or you can do it yourself (although they forgot to get us our own tongs without being reminded).  I can't say the BBQ is that much more special than other locations (we tried the special sauce ribeye and the ribs), but I can say they're selection of banchan (the little side dishes) was fair and they refilled without an issue.

Definitely more chic than the average location, and they had a lovely black raspberry wine that everyone liked. Away form the main K-town line, so less crazy and good for a business dinner (though I feel like my rowdier birthday parties here would be a bit less welcome).

Sara P. and I were walking to Don's Bogam to meet friends for dinner when we made the terrible mistake of cutting through the streets right near Times Square, just because we didn't want to wait for the light to walk around it.

    Oops.

Nonetheless, we arrived unscathed, albeit a bit annoyed at the huge crowds that clustered and gawked and shuffled (the only time we deem it acceptable to walk through Times Square is early in the morning, when no one is out yet).

Luckily we had a Korean in our group to order loads of BBQ meats for us, because we were too overwhelmed by all the delicious choices.  Plates of beef, pork belly, and pajeon (which, if you aren't familiar with Korean food, get this and you will not regret it) later, we welcomed the walk back across town because we needed to work off the calories and fight the food coma.

Besides the odd seating arrangements where you have to climb in to sit underneath (I cannot imagine my elderly grandmother even being able to sit in the "booth" that we had, but maybe they assign tables based on perceived youth and/or athletic ability/agility), this was a great place to be carnivores, chat, and hide from the cold that is December anywhere outside of California.

One of the best weekday Midtown lunches I've ever had, bar none. DB was not on my list or anything, but Yelp had a hand in leading me here. When a work buddy and I got the hankering for Korean, we naturally made a beeline to K-Town. None of the joints on West 32nd were calling out to us. We whipped out our magic devices and voila, Don's was only another block's walk.

DB is a classy joint, with an upmarket decor perfect for business lunch. The restaurant is spacious and larger than the storefront would suggest. We were led to the back area, which was a tad more casual. The seating is interesting: they have these tatami-like seats with cushions that kind of look subterranean, with your lower limbs disappearing into the floor. Actually, it's quite a snug fit in there.

As in other Korean eateries, service was brisk. We got the banchan as soon as we ordered, munching on wonderful nibbles like sauteed spinach, several pickled veggies, and even dry fish flakes (at least that's what I think it was). The lunch specials are excellent, ranging from $12-$16 with a choice of stew (more of a soup). I opted for the DON special (pork belly with stew and rice) accompanied by Haemul-sundubu (spicy seafood and tofu broth). We ordered a couple of Cass lagers (Friday afternoon!) and had a leisurely lunch.

I came away very happy. Don's is good eating and stands out from an already very good pack of K-Town restaurants.

Went with a group of 6 (and a 2 year old child) and Don Bogam's was great and very accommodating! The quality of the beef was spot on; we got the marinated & prime beef platters for two and it fed all 6 of us, so it's a lot! There was enough bonchon for all of us and had we asked, I'm sure they would have brought us more (but we were so stuffed!).

All in all - I'd definitely go back!

First experience having Korean food..let alone Korean BBQ. Loved it. We ordered dinner for 2 and requested a table with a bbq grill.  We were served what i felt was a good amount for two. Was fully satisfied after. The waiter cooked our meat right in front of us (For some reason i thought we'd be doing the cooking but i guess not. Probably better that way). The waiter was friendly and helpful especially that we didn't necessarily know what to get.  Overall a great experience with great food.

Baekjeong was so packed down the block, so we came here. It was a nice place and everything tastes pretty good. Meat was pretty good quality.

Are you like me who lusts for Galbi Tang every time I am hungry?

Don Bogam has probably one of the BEST Galbi Tangs in the city. When my stomach is misbehaving and hungry...the Galbi Tang here tames that desire. The soup is filled with succulent beef that is so tender the meat just falls off the bones.

I was not able to try the other foods here, but I reckon them to be good. Don Bogam is certainly one of the classier Korean Restaurants in K- Town.

    Service:

The service here is extremely slow and can get very crowded. So be prepared... It starts getting crowded after 6:30 PM.

    Cost:

Be prepared to spend around $20 - $30.

Top quality meats here.  Not too much room under the midget sized tables though

A bit pricier but worth it

The delta between one of my foodie friend's rave reviews of this place's beef BBQ and my experience is astounding. I really didn't like any of their BBQ meat. The waiters look like Korean male models, but they were slow/unattentive and didn't even pretend to care about their customers.

It's an expensive restaurant for what you get. I prefer the other restaurants that are on the central K-town block.

    Overpriced korean food here.

I came here with a group of around 11 people. You could tell that they skimped on the bonchon (side dishes). They gave us two portions of the bonchon, which clearly WASN'T enough for 11 people. We were given: black beans, bok choy, bean sprouts, kimchi, lotus pieces and another dish that was unidentifiable. Our table of 11 people were given two portions of this.

Then came the japchae (~10+). It came in small boat-like dish and was barely able to feed three kids. We also ordered kimchi and seafood pancake, so far the only reasonably sized dish we were given. We also ordered some tofu soups and rice.

We ordered several meat dishes for two (~79). The beef was very good but the pork was dry and tasteless.

Overall, I would not come here again. In fact, the next time I am craving korean food, I will make sure to peruse the rest of korea town before coming to this place ever again.

    Where do I begin.

The food was good, that's why I gave 2 stars.
The service went downhill the longer my stay.  I was at Don's Bogam with my friends for brunch and not BBQ, the service we got because of not ordering bbq was disgraceful. I've been to many korean restaurants on korean way and this restaurant had the worst service yet. We waited 20 mins for a waiter to take our order. My friend Nicole was ignored repeatedly when she was simply requesting for hot sauce. When my friend who wasn't of asian descent ordered, the waiter gave her a distasteful look and hesitantly took her order. I will not be returning to this restaurant because there are plenty of better restaurants who provide better service and better food.

Are prices usually this high? I haven't ate Korean for quite some time since it's so carby but it's the worth the extra miles of cardio!

I ordered the tofu dolsot bibimbap and the topokki. I love that the stone pot is large, it feels like I'm getting more than there is. Additionally, there's more surface area for the rice to wrap around the bowl keeping it the perfect temperature and texture. As for the topokki, I felt like it was way too pricey for the portion. I think Shilla makes it the best.

Oddly I was still hungry after eating the side dishes, the miso soup that I didn't even know it came with and my two dishes. I ended up eating half a bowl of rice and still wanted to eat more. Does this mean I love Korean food? I usually feel stuffed by the end of my meal. Hmm.

The water service was great. I suggest going for the BBQ seats, the ambience is traditional - the floor is elevated so you are closer to the table and your feet are warmly below the table. There's only one other Korean place that does this but they get even more traditional and they make you take off your shoes! The BBQ tables require a minimal order of 2 BBQ dishes to sit there. The prices for the BBQ are $$$$.

Great dinner. Great staff - very attentive.
