China's Ding Junhui recovered from missing out on a maximum 147 break in bizarre circumstances to beat Mark Davis 10-7 at the World Championship.

The third seed potted 12 reds and 12 blacks in frame nine, only to seemingly lose concentration and screw back for the blue when potting the 13th red.

Ding laughed at his error, which cost him a potential £30,000 for a maximum, but recovered to ease into round two.

"I didn't even think about it until the fans made a noise," said Ding.

He had looked in trouble in the early stages against Davis, trailing the Englishman 4-0 at one point and losing Tuesday's opening frame to fall 5-3 behind.

And it was in the next frame where he played away from the black with three reds remaining.

"How to cost yourself £30,000 in one minute," said commentator Willie Thorne, while Davis told his opponent he "must have too much money".

World number three Ding said his error happened because he was so focused on winning the frame to get back into the match. He still took on the black, though, attempting a fine cut from distance, but his effort found the jaws of the pocket.

He added: "I didn't know then I looked at the scoreboard and had made it difficult for myself. I didn't even think about the 147, just kept going potting the balls. It was an important frame to come back."

Ding, who won five ranking events last season, has yet to register a win in this campaign but looked strong to see off Davis, winning four of the last five frames to set up a second-round meeting with John Higgins.
