Shaun Murphy joined Judd Trump in the World Championship semi-finals after ending the hopes of Anthony McGill.

The Scot had knocked out Stephen Maguire and the defending champion, Mark Selby, to reach the last eight on his Crucible debut.

But Murphy, the 2005 winner, had his measure in a 13-8 win, sealed with a 67 break. After scoring three centuries in the match, and accelerating away from 6-6, Murphy hinted that he is in dominant form and he will next face Neil Robertson or Barry Hawkins.

Hawkins eked out an 8-7 lead there, taking a 70-minute 15th frame having earlier seen Robertson win three on the spin to recover from 7-3 adrift, setting up a likely close evening finish.

Murphy would doubtless be glad to see that go all the way to a deciding frame, given he tackles the winner on Thursday afternoon in the first of their four semi-final sessions.

Asked whether he can be champion, Murphy said: “I’d like to think so. I’ve had good years here before and know what it takes to win this tournament.

“It’s a massive deal to be in the semi-finals. I’ve not been there for six years.”

“That’s what everyone who comes wants to do, is play in the one-table set-up.

“It’s been hard having to go home at this stage and watch everyone else battle on for the tournament, but I’m in it, I’m still punching and I can’t wait.”

McGill said: “I got completely hammered. He was far too good.

“I’ve learnt it’s the best place ever to play. I hope to come back again.

“I’m really grateful I’ve had the chance to come here.” Trump faces Ronnie O’Sullivan or Stuart Bingham next.
