Mayor of London

What we've done

Here are some improvements we've made so far:

  • Delays fell by 40% between 2007/8 and 20011/12 and are on track to decrease by another 30% by 2015 (compared to 2011)
  • The massive redevelopment at King's Cross St Pancras quadrupled the size of this key station
  • We've modernised and added step-free access at Blackfriars, Farringdon, Green Park and Paddington (Hammersmith & City)
  • 66 stations are now step-free
  • 47 new trains on the Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines
  • WiFi is available at 150 stations
  • We have modernised the Northern line signalling, providing a faster, more frequent and more reliable service with up to 20% more capacity through central London during the busiest time

Northern line

The signalling system was modernised on the Northern line to provide a faster, more frequent and more reliable service. Watch our video on YouTube to find out how this benefits you.

At Embankment station we have replaced four escalators with new, custom-built machines to ensure a reliable escalator service for many decades to come. At the same time, we carried out works to freshen up the station - new tiling, paint, CCTV systems and more.

As part of the Tottenham Court Road station works, we have opened a new entrance and ticket hall to increase station capacity. See time-lapse videos of the work done for the new ticket hall and the new Tube entrance on YouTube.

View the progress of the works on our Facebook page.

Central line

Chancery Lane just got better. We redecorated the station and replaced the safety and security systems. View photos of the station on our Facebook page.

We increased the frequency of Central line services on the busiest part of the line in September 2013.

The middle part of the line now runs around 34 trains per hour during the busiest morning rush hour period. This is the most intensive train service in the UK, with some passengers waiting less than two minutes between trains.

Evening and weekend services have also been increased on many parts of the line.

We refreshed the entire fleet of 85 trains in 2012. We replaced all seat backs, pads and sitting perches, covering them in a fabric that will be used across all Tube lines in future.

Train windows and around 250 body panels were also replaced to give the line a fresh, new look.

Paddington

More than 60,000 passengers currently use the Paddington (Hammersmith & City) station every day and demand has already increased dramatically as a result of the extension of the Circle line to Hammersmith. We have prepared for further increases in demand ahead of Crossrail services in 2018 by installing lifts providing step-free access from a new ticket hall to platforms.

Circle line

District line

Hammersmith & City line

Our upgrade of these lines includes the oldest section of the Tube - from Paddington to Farringdon - which is more than 150 years old.

We've planned the upgrade to Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines in three stages:

  • The first stage was in 2009 with the revision to Circle line route - doubling the number of trains on the Hammersmith branch
  • The second stage is well underway - this will deliver 133 spacious new air-conditioned trains to the line when it is complete
  • The third stage is a huge ongoing programme of works to modernise and replace old and worn out tracks, drainage, points, and later this decade, to introduce a brand new signalling system across these lines

Blackfriars station

Major redevelopment work at Blackfriars station was completed in February 2012. Benefits include a modernised station with step-free access, increased capacity and better interchange between Tube and National Rail services.

Hammersmith station (H&C line)

Hammersmith station got better. We introduced a new exit and entrance on Beadon Road. We've also extended the platform for longer trains, given the ticket hall and flooring a facelift and installed a new gateline. View photos of the station on our Facebook page.

New trains

We've already introduced new trains on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines and on the Edgware Road-Wimbledon service on the District line. These are seven carriages long - one carriage longer than the old trains.

We are now rolling out new trains on to the remainder of the District line, with the plan to replace at least two trains a month. By 2016, all old District line trains will have been withdrawn.

All these new trains are air-conditioned, with walk-through carriages, automated visual displays and station announcements, plus CCTV. They also have dedicated wheelchair areas, wider doors and walkways, lower passenger alarms and easier access between the train and platform.

See our video on the new trains.

Green Park

Green Park station has been modernised and now has step-free access to all platforms, and between all lines. Platform humps provide level access to trains. Above ground, a new ramped station entrance provides direct access from Green Park.

Jubilee line

Every journey made on the line is now two minutes faster on average because of an upgraded signalling system. The installation of the new signalling system, completed in 2011, is helping us to cope with ever-increasing passenger numbers, especially going to and from Canary Wharf.

We can now run up to 30 trains along the line every hour compared to 24 an hour previously. That's the equivalent of carrying an additional 12,500 people an hour. We have increased the number of trains run at weekends and extended more services to Wembley Park.

Metropolitan line

We've already introduced a fleet of fully air-conditioned trains to the line, the first new trains in 50 years.

The more spacious walk-through carriages are fitted with visual displays and feature automated station announcements to help you on your journey. There's also the reassurance of CCTV.

Heathrow Terminals 1-2-3

Extensive improvements to Heathrow Terminals 1-2-3 Underground station, made in cooperation with BAA, are now complete. New lifts to platforms provide step-free access and platform humps now offer level access when boarding trains. The upgrade also includes a modernised ticket office, additional gates, and new signage and Help Points.

Piccadilly line

To meet growing demand, we have increased the number of trains per hour on Saturdays and weekday evenings. The new timetable was introduced on 18 May 2014.

At Russell Square station, we refurbished three lifts to improve reliability. Watch our video on YouTube to find out what this work involved.

At Finsbury Park station, we've doubled the capacity of the two spiral staircases from the Tube to National Rail platforms.

At Gloucester Road station, we replaced both lifts. View photos of the station on our Facebook page.

Victoria line

We're running more trains than ever before - up to 34 an hour - meaning they are less than two minutes apart at peak times. About 10,000 more passengers an hour overall can now travel on the Victoria line, all thanks to the state-of-the-art signalling equipment and trains we've introduced.

On weekdays, during peak hours, the number of trains will increase from 33 to 34 trains per hour. On Saturdays, between 12:30 and 18:30, the number of trains increased from 24 to 27 trains per hour. On Sunday, there are now 24 trains per hour from 09:00 until 22:00.

Improved fleet
Our new trains are bigger and more comfortable with wider aisles and doors, and higher ceilings. They also have dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and security features like CCTV in every carriage and push-button emergency alarms connected directly to the driver's cab.

Regenerative braking technology means energy is returned to the rails to be used by other trains, rather than adding to heat in the tunnels.

More accessible
Platform humps have been installed at all stations on the Victoria line (except Pimlico). These provide level access to the trains, meaning easier journeys for customers with mobility impairments, luggage or pushchairs.

At Finsbury Park station, we've doubled the capacity of the two spiral staircases from the Tube to National Rail platforms.

Waterloo & City line

The Waterloo & City line is now open until 00:30 Monday to Saturday.

The new timetable, introduced in September 2013, also allows for more frequent trains on weekday evenings. This means waiting times are reduced, overall journey times are faster and we can carry more people.
