ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM AT KSC
Environmental Planning - Cultural Resources
Cultural resources are the physical remains of a people’s way of life that archaeologists and historians study to try to interpret how people lived. Cultural resources are important because they help us to learn about our past. These tangible remains help us understand other cultures, appreciate architecture and engineering, and learn about past accomplishments. Furthermore, they offer educational and recreational opportunities and provide links to our past. The Federal Government recognizes the value of irreplaceable prehistoric and historic cultural resources and is committed to protect them from damage. Numerous laws have been passed to protect these resources.
KSC contains resources from prehistoric and historic elements. Today, KSC’s cultural resources management program, which includes archaeology, history architecture, employs personnel to identify, evaluate, and preserve cultural and historic resources encountered at planned construction projects or existing facilities.
Identification / Determination:
To determine if a project will impact a historic or archeological site reference (KDP_P_1733), fill out the KSC Environmental Checklist (NASA Access Only) and submit it to the NASA Environmental Management Branch (EMB/SI-E3). EMB will then review the checklist to determine whether the project merits consultation with the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO). View KSC-PLN-1733 Rev A, the Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan here.

Do you know if you work in a historic property or in a historic district? KSC manages more than 100 historic properties, seven historic districts and 180 archaeological sites. Two new classes, NASA and the National Historic Preservation Act (HQ-011-NNHPA) and Understanding NASA's Historic Districts (HQ-011-UNHD), will explain the inventory, evaluation, nomination and management of federal historic properties. Please take the time to review this information because it could be helpful one day in planning your next project. Employees will log into their SATERN account and search for the two classes.
