The expedition arrived at Lucenda near Kazembe on the 2nd October, 1798, and Lacerda, worn out with fever, died on the 18th October. Fr. Francisco João Pinto took command but did not find it easy to control his followers. Ensign Pires died on the return journey. Corporal P. da Silva and the soldier C. da Cesta did not return with the main expedition but attempted to reach Angola.
