Haves and have-nots: England's most and least deprived places – in pictures

1: Middlesbrough. Despite blue skies over Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough is top of the government’s index of most deprived local authority districts in England.

2: Knowsley. The Merseyside borough comes second in the new government list of the most deprived districts in England. This local centre provides a library as well as a surgery for residents.

3: Hull. The city is the third most deprived local district in England. Its public aquarium, the Deep, opened in 2002.

4. Liverpool. Regeneration of its waterfront, as well as other measures, has helped the city move from being the district with most deprivation in 2010, to fourth place in the list this year.

5. Manchester. Five years ago, the city was the third highest area of deprivation in England, but it has moved down to fifth place in 2015.

Most advantaged, 5: Elmbridge. The district of Elmbridge, which includes Esher, Walton-on-Thames and Weybridge, is the fifth least-deprived district in England.
