The airport of Andorra-la Seu d’Urgell will now become a commercial airport, once the process has finalized to convert the facility, until now a private aerodrome, into a public and commercial airport. The airport can now receive tourist flights, passenger flights, freight and postal carriers and air taxis.

The Generalitat, the owner of the airport, has invested €1 million in order to guarantee it meets the necessary requirements for transforming it into a commercial airport.

New regional services

From now on, not only will private light planes be able to land at the airport but also higher-capacity planes, transporting passengers and freight. Thus, the activity of the airport has been expanded to cater for aircraft with a capacity for 40 people, which are characteristics of airline companies that cover regional routes, either with scheduled or charter flights.

The airport can also receive corporate aircraft and/or air taxis, destined to private passenger transport, with a saving of time and a flexibility that is not provided by regular airlines. With regards freight traffic, the airport can guarantee more speedy deliveries in an area only accessible by road.

In order to receive passengers outside the Schengen Area, Aeroports de Catalunya has already started the procedure with the Ministry of the Interior and other official bodies with the aim of installing a border inspection point.

Catalonia and Andorra reach an agreement to manage the airport

The Government of Catalonia and the Government of Andorra will collaborate in the management and the promotion of the airport, as well as in the search for operators, with the aim of activating the economy of the region. The management and operations of the airport will remain in the hands of the Generalitat, through Aeroports de Catalunya, whilst the Government of Andorra will contribute 50% of the operating costs of the infrastructure, with a maximum of €300,000, as well as a variable cost according to the number of passengers that arrive on commercial flights.

Over 9,700 flights since reopening, four years ago

On 4th June 2010, the Government of Catalonia reopened the infrastructure as a private aerodrome after renewing the facilities and the runway. The airport, which had been in private hands, had closed in 1984. Currently, and with 9,750 operations carried out, the airport has five hangars, a catering service and an aircraft fuel service.

The facility, which to date operated as a private aerodrome, can now receive tourist flights, passenger flights, freight and postal carriers and air taxis
