Behind the Shot with Kyren Wilson | Betfred World Championship

Carter Stuns Trump

Ali CarterAli Carter scored one of his best results of the season with a 4-1 win over Judd Trump to reach the quarter-finals of the Ladbrokes Players Championship in Manchester.

World number six Trump was outplayed by his opponent and is left waiting for his first ranking title since the 2014 Australian Goldfields Open. He won the opening frame with a break of 62 but Carter then took control to win four in a row with top breaks of 72, 112 and 57. He now faces Marco Fu or Ricky Walden.

“When I think back to where I was 18 months ago, to be playing Judd on a TV table and beating him is fantastic,” said Carter, who has battled cancer twice in the past three years. “Rome wasn’t built in a day and this is a rebuilding season for me. But I’m moving in the right direction.”

Ding Junhui moved into the top 16 of the projected rankings with a superb 4-0 thrashing of Michael White.

Ding was 19th on the projected list just a few weeks ago but by reaching at least the quarter-finals of three consecutive ranking events he has now moved above fellow Chinese cueman Liang Wenbo into 16th place. If he’s still in that bracket by the end of next week’s China Open he’ll avoid having to qualify for the World Championship.

A superb 143 total clearance, the highest break of the tournament so far, gave Ding the opening frame today and he added the next three against an out-of-sorts White with top breaks of 62 and 80.

“Everyone is talking about the top 16 this week but I’m trying not to think about it, I’m just trying to win matches,” said Ding, who now plays Barry Hawkins or Robert Milkins in Friday’s quarter-finals. “I’m getting more confidence with each match. I started with a big break today and that helped. Michael is a great player but he struggled today.”

Mark Allen booked his place in the next round with a 4-2 defeat of Mark King. Northern Ireland’s Allen scored a top break of 119 as he earned a tie with Mike Dunn.

“I played a lot better today than I did yesterday,” said Allen. “I made the most of my chances. I’ve really got my eyes on the World Championship but if I can have a good run here it will give me a lift.”

World number 40 Dunn reached the quarter-finals of a ranking event for only the second time in his career with a 4-2 win over Ryan Day. “I’ve been around for a long time but it’s different playing on terrestrial TV,” said Redcar’s Dunn, whose top break was 69. “The pressure is massive and I struggled to get over the line. I’ve had a good season and this is a big win for me. Ryan is a quality player but he missed a few today.”
