'A Girl At My Door' rocks Cannes 2014

"A Girl at My Door,'' a coming-of-age film by July Jung, has garnered rapturous applause at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Slotted in the festival's Un Certain Regard program, the film was screened on Monday, and 120 minutes later, Jung and the film's stars Bae Doo-na, Kim Sae-ron and Song Sae-byuk were soaking in a lengthy standing ovation from the audience.

Bae starts as Yeongnam, a woman who tries to rescue Dohee (Kim) from her abusive father Yongha (Song). Yeongnam eventually discovers that she needs the school girl more than the school girl needs her.

Clarence Tsui from Hollywood Reporter gave high marks to director Jung's screenplay. Mark Adams from Screen Daily thought it was the actors that carried the bleak but poignant drama.

Director of Film Department and Deputy General Delegate Christian Jeune said he was impressed by the film's casts, especially Kim, whom he said he hoped to see in the next festival.

The film will open in Korean theaters on Thursday.

배두나, 김새론, 송새벽 세 배우를 향한 박수는 끝날 줄을 몰랐고, 배우들도 손을 흔들며 웃는 얼굴로 화답했다. 현지의 관계자들은 모든 행사가 끝난 후 극장을 나서는 외신 기자들이 '정말 완벽한 영화였다. 시나리오는 완벽했고 배우들의 연기 역시 말할 것도 없이 완벽했다. 영상도 예뻤고 모든 것이 다 조화롭게 어우러진 영화였다'라며 '도희야'에 대한 흥분을 감추지 못했다고 전했다.

신예 정주리 감독의 첫 장편 영화이자, 폭력에 홀로 노출된 소녀의 모든 것을 지키기 위한 위험한 선택을 둘러싼 잔혹하고도 아름다운 이야기 '도희야'는 제 67회 칸 국제영화제 '주목할 만한 시선' 부문에 공식 초청되어 국내는 물론, 전 세계적인 관심을 모으며 2014년 5월 22일, 이제껏 보지 못한 강렬한 드라마로 관객들을 찾아갈 예정이다.
