Elder Law: a better Quality of life

America’s ability to protect its elderly citizens is among the many aspects that makes the country one of the best in the world. Although racial and gender discrimination are topics of which everyone is aware of, age discrimination is a lesser known evil. This is where the idea of elder law comes into play. This subcategory of law deals with protecting the aging part of the population against fraudulent behavior that specifically targets senior citizens.

The main areas of elder law usually involve wills, trusts, estate planning, medical care counselors, disability care, and guardianship. Many who work in the field are employed in law offices. These workers are generally attorneys or legal assistants responsible for advising and helping with quality of life or end of life care and arrangements. However, a great many other careers deal with how to properly and legally manage elderly care.

Other than legal careers, some jobs that deal with elder law include funeral directors, case workers, financial planners, caregivers, transportation providers, mortgage brokers, and insurance providers. Additionally, organizations like the Better Business Bureau commonly investigate age discrimination in the workplace. Even the Bureau of Motor Vehicles has had to adjust some standards to protect aging citizens on the road.

It could even be argued that every employment opportunity is under the umbrella of elder care. A grocery store must accommodate for decreased mobility with motorized carts. Many even offer carryout services for those who need extra help.

Many software industries now offer larger print on tablets and phones to assist failing eyes. Industries like LifeLock manufacture specific devices for emergency assistance. Constant innovations in technology and appliances help accommodate decreased mobility. Therapy programs and hospice programs help to improve quality of life for aging and injured patients.

Almost any career can involve the protection of older citizens within society. As life spans get longer, society continually evolves to accommodate an older population. A quality society can often be defined by how well they are able to care for their aging population. The constant betterment of senior care ensures that the caretakers of today will be well taken care of tomorrow.
