Here’s something that might feel like ancient history: before it was your one-stop shop for movie streaming and TV binging, Netflix used to mail you DVDs.
Not only does Netflix still provide that service (to 5.3 million people, apparently), but it’s not actually Netflixanymore. Netflixpurchased the domain name DVD.com in 2012, and over time, shifted the mailing service’s name from Netflix to DVD.Netflix.com to DVD.com (no, it’s not called Qwikster, bonus points for remembering that, though). Now, it’s officially known as DVD.com / A Netflix Company.
Anyway, DVD.com has been having some fun in its own corner of the Netflix brand. Every so often, the iconic bright-red envelopes will show up with doodles and designs on them, typically to promote a movie or celebrate a holiday, and often with sly, subtle references to classic movies.
Unlike most of us, Bill Feldhaus didn’t cancel his DVD subscription, and since 2012 he’s been scanning and uploading those bright-red envelopes to his Tumblr page, Enveloper, for the whole world to see.
Check out the gallery above to see some of our favorites and then head over to Feldhaus’ Tumblr here to see them all.
