The Demography Unit produces and publishes statistics on the human population primarily as it relates to the size, structure and development. The main source of data collection is through a census of all individuals in the country at a particular point in time and the civil registration system. The Population and Housing Census as it is generally referred to, is the largest exercise of the Central Statistical Office conducted every ten years in keeping with international standards. During that exercise data on the housing status of the nation is also captured. St. Lucia is one of the many islands in the Region to have successfully concluded its last Population and Housing Census in 2010 revealing an estimated household resident population of 165,595 persons.

Each year the Demography Unit produces mid-year estimates as a measure of determining the growth and demographic composition of the household resident or non-institutionalised population. Using the most recent census as the base, these estimates are derived using the administrative records of births and deaths and a derivative factor of migration from census data to estimate population change between census years. With each annual release of the population mid-year estimates, the estimates of the previous year is revised and updated. The Registry of Civil Status in Saint Lucia is a very importance source for the compilation and production of vital statistics. Whereas the census provides data on the population stock on census night, the civil or vital registration system provides data on population flows. Through the use of these administrative records the Unit generates statistics on fertility, mortality, morbidity and nuptiality patterns on an annual basis.
