KATSE BOTANICAL GARDEN
  Main Objectives 1. To work towards conservation and sustainable use of botanical resources. 2. To strengthen the eco-tourism role of the botanical garden. 3. To educate, raise awareness and build capacity of botanical resource users and visitors. The garden has been in existence for a mere 13 years (1996-2010) and today is fully functional. It boasts a large plant propagation area and extensive pathways that conduct the visitor to pass the displays of Sesotho traditional medicinal plants eg. Hypoxis spp, Bulbine spp., mountain wetland species Ranunculas baurii and petaloid monocots e.g. Dierama, Gladiolus, Crinum spp. The garden has a unique collection representing the dry Senqu River vegetation e.g. Stapelia flavirostris and another rare and endangered plant species. Other activities at the garden have resulted in the assembly of a large seed bank and scientific and horticultural collaboration with other regional and international botanic gardens. The implementation of outreach programmes have proved partially successful as local communities are now visibly proud to be associated with the showcasing of their national flora. Some villagers are participating in plant propagation projects focused on commercially viable species, which bring revenue to areas of high unemployment. The tar road ends at the gate of the Katse Botanical Garden, a real gem in the crown of the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Don’t miss it.
