Wilmington Mayor-elect Mike Purzycki and the incoming City Council and city treasurer will take their oaths of office at a ceremony on Tuesday.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held during the organizational meeting of the 107th Session of the council at the Grand Opera House on Market Street. The doors will open at 7:45 p.m., and the meeting will begin at 8. The event is free and open to the public. Seats are available on a first come, first served basis.

City Council President-elect Hanifa Shabazz and incoming City Treasurer Velda Jones-Potter are the first black women to be elected to their roles, according to the city.

“I am humbled by the encouragement I continue to receive from people throughout our city,” said Shabazz, who represented District 4 for 12 years. “It is heartening especially when women and people of color tell me they are proud of what I have achieved and remind me what this means for others who will choose public service in the future as a way to help our city and our neighborhoods.”

Formerly a chief strategist for Mayor Dennis P. Williams, Jones-Potter became the first African-American to serve in a statewide elected office when she was appointed state treasurer by Gov. Jack Markell in 2009.
