Students Say

Undergrads at this esteemed university don't mince words when boasting about all that UCLA has to offer. As a geography and environmental science double-major proudly declares, "There's nothing that can't be accomplished at UCLA. The possibilities are endless, and the resources are unparalleled." Moreover, students appreciate the "ideal" location as well as the "pride of going to a Division I school with more NCAA championships than any other college/university." Perhaps more notable, "UCLA is the kind of school that pushes you to work hard academically but reminds you that interaction with people outside of the classroom is just as important." Students are continually impressed by their professors who are "leaders in their field." Indeed, most consider it "a privilege to study under them." While some undergrads caution that you might encounter some teachers simply "in it for the research," others insist, "Most professors care about their students." A political science major interjects, saying that professors "are willing to work extra hours with students and help us with anything we need." An English major concurs, sharing, "I have never had a professor that I did not feel comfortable approaching, which has made my academic experience incredibly more beneficial." As this grateful junior succinctly explains, "UCLA is the campus. The people, the weather, the academics, the sports; it has absolutely everything I could ever want."

“UCLA is about getting a top notch education at a (currently) affordable price that will start your career off on an excellent path,” is a popular sentiment regarding how the school equips students for their future. The Career Center offers standard services like advising and counseling; job fairs; on-campus recruiting; job and internship search tools; resources for those applying to grad school or looking for international opportunities; and “JumpStart” workshops covering professional development topics in a wide variety of fields. Students seem very satisfied with what the school affords them: “Networking and marketing, you’re always told of a ton of activities, internships, resource opportunities—there are constant career fairs and activities. Also, location-wise, L.A. is a huge cosmopolitan city, you’ve got the opportunity to work in anything.” Out of UCLA alumni visiting PayScale.com, 49 percent report that they derive a high level of meaning from their job.

Bottom Line

For Californians, the cumulative price tag to attend UCLA for a year—when you add up fees, room and board, and basic expenses—is somewhere around $34,000. Your living arrangements can make a noticeable difference. If you can’t claim residency in the Golden State, the cost totals $58,600. Almost all students who demonstrate need receive some form of aid, and the average cumulative indebtedness, at just $20,800, is relatively reasonable.

Bang For Your Buck

Even in a time of rising fees, UCLA remains far below most of the other top research universities in total costs for undergraduate study. A little more than half of the student population here receives need-based financial aid. This school prizes its diversity, and that definitely includes economic diversity. UCLA ranks at the top among major research universities in the percentage of its students that receive Pell Grants (which is free government money for low-income students). The university also offers the prestigious Regents Scholarship, intended to reward extraordinary academic excellence and exemplary leadership and community service accomplishments. Also, the career-planning operation here is first-rate, and there are extensive opportunities for internships with local employers. UCLA Financial Aid and Scholarships has both advisors and counselors available to help students complete financial aid applications, and to provide guidance throughout the process. In-person appointments can be scheduled, but the office also has walk-in hours. The UCLA website also provides access to certain scholarship opportunities, but the school also has a resource center on campus. The Scholarship Resource Center opened in 1996 to provide scholarship information, resources, and support services to all UCLA students, regardless of financial aid eligibility.

Students Say

UCLA "is the mold that fits you." Indeed, more than "26,000 students and more than 950 student groups," virtually assures that "there is no ‘typical' student" to be found at UCLA. This wide range of individuals and activities guarantees that "everyone has their niche." Certainly, the Bruin community is a "vibrant" one, and "the unmatched diversity broadens students' horizons culturally and socially." Of course, undergrads here do tread some common ground. Many define their peers as "very hardworking and ambitious," and they typically "strive for success and to do their absolute best." They "know how to have a good time, but they also know when it is time to study." Further, it's an active student body, and it often "seems like everyone is in at least one club or organization." Friendliness is another trademark of UCLA undergrads as a physiology major assures us, "It is very easy to talk to and meet new people and make new friends." Fortunately, most people are "laid-back" and while "academically invested…[they're] not outright competitive with other students." This bio major sums up his peers easily by saying, "Everyone comes from different backgrounds with varied interests. The only common denominator is truly an appetite for excellence."

Students Say

There's so much "hustle and bustle" at UCLA that it would be virtually "impossible to [be] bored." While nearly everyone's "main focus is on school," most students also know how to "play hard." Indeed, "whether it be in Greek life, a club or organization, everybody has somewhere they can go to relax and have some fun. The apartments are close to campus, so nearly everybody lives in a small area with close proximity." Sports "are extremely popular here, and conversations about the Bruins are common." There are also "tons of movie showings on campus, recreation centers, pools, activities, [and] events." Additionally, students love being located in Los Angeles. A happy senior reveals, "You can take a five-minute drive and you'll be soaking in the Pacific Ocean, or take an hour drive where you can be hitting the slopes in Big Bear. You can walk down to the theater and run into Jennifer Lopez or head to the UCLA gym and watch…Kobe Bryant practicing. The possibilities are endless here, with or without money."

Sustainability

University of California—Los Angeles is going green from its classrooms to its cafeterias. A few highlights include replacing all Styrofoam tableware with biodegradable items in the dining areas, recycling condensate water from its science labs, and hosting a series of environmentally focused speakers and forums. In 2013, UCLA announced the Grand Challenge in Environment and Sustainability—a groundbreaking interdisciplinary initiative that will bring together more than 160 faculty across different disciplines with the goal of helping the Los Angeles region achieve 100 percent sustainability in energy, water, and biodiversity by 2050. Students on the move can participate in the school’s bike share program, or use its car share and vanpools to get around. Or, if students have their own sustainable initiatives in mind, there exists a “Green Initiative Fund” which raises more than $200,000 per year for UCLA’s sustainable projects. The UCLA Action Research Teams is an academic course where students work with staff and faculty to do hands on research on campus sustainability. UCLA is home to an organic garden and an experiential learning course in which students can investigate sources of food. UCLA is committed to making all new construction and major renovation projects LEED Silver-certified or higher. This year, solar panels are being installed on Parking Structure 9 as part of electric vehicle charging research. The university is also home to the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, an intellectual community focused on environmental research, policy concerns, and outreach and education. A remarkable 66 percent of UCLA’s waste stream is currently diverted from landfills. The campus is aiming to improve that number to 100 percent by 2020.
