There's something familiar about the jerseys the Pittsburgh Penguins will wear during their 50th anniversary season.

The team announced on Friday that the “Pittsburgh Gold” alternates they've used for the past two seasons, including throughout the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs, will become their new home standards.

The new road sweaters will take their cues from that design, which was modeled on the one worn by Penguins legends like Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr while winning the Stanley Cup in 1991 and '92. Gone is the flashier (and universally despised) hue known as “Vegas Gold” that had been used as a uniform color since the 2002-03 season, replaced by the "Pittsburgh Gold" made famous by baseball's Pirates and football's Steelers.

The instantly recognizable shade is derived from the city's flag.

Nothing succeeds like success, so returning to a palette that's deeply connected with the team's championship tradition is sure to be a popular call. Now, let's never speak of Vegas Gold again.
