Suzy kills it (literally) in the music video for her sultry single "Yes No Maybe."

Bae Suzy, the frontwoman of K-pop girl group miss A, dropped her first solo album Yes? No? on Monday (Jan. 23). The EP was accompanied by the single, "Yes No Maybe,” and had been preceded by the chart-topping “Pretend” on Jan. 17.

“Yes No Maybe” is a midtempo, melancholy ballad that draws on ‘90s pop sensibilities. Suzy’s airy vocals match the overall muted sound of the single, as each lyric is sung with a hint of restraint. Written by Park Jin Young, the founder of Suzy's management company JYP Entertainment, the melody’s most defining feature is a steady beat laid over subtle electronic whirring.

The accompanying music video draws on Hong Kong’s cinematography of the same era, and particularly references the work of filmmaker Wong Kar-wai. The short film features Suzy as a lovelorn femme fatale, a trope that Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun also drew inspiration from in her recently released “Don’t Say No” music video.

A week prior to releasing Yes? No?, Suzy’s anticipatory R&B single “Pretend” rose to the top of Korean music charts, thanks to her sweet vocal performance and the song’s mellow sound.

Yes? No? contains six songs, two of which Suzy had a hand in creating. The singer co-wrote "Heater Forever," and provided lyrics for "Les Préférences." Suzy is the second miss A member to debut as a soloist, following last year’s smoldering “Fantasy” single from Fei.

While miss A is a successful K-pop girl group and their 2015 hit “Only You” was one of the best songs of the year, Suzy’s popularity goes far beyond her career as a singer. She first rose to popularity in 2011 after appearing in the popular Korean television show Dream High, and has since appeared in several shows and films. Last Year's "Dream" duet with EXO's Baekhyun proved to be one of the most popular K-pop collaborations of 2016, and raised anticipation for Suzy’s solo album.
