The graph below shows the total value of the UK’s import and export trade in goods for the annual period ending September 2016.

Key points
In the year to September 2016, the value of UK trade in goods exports increased by 0.2 per cent and imports increased by 3.4 per cent.
Exports
- Of the four UK countries, only Scotland saw a decrease in exports during the year.
- There was a decrease in annual export value for all England regions except the West Midlands, the East of England and the South East.
- The largest export partner by value for England and Scotland was USA. Germany was the largest export partner for Wales and the Irish Republic was the largest export partner for Northern Ireland.
- The partner countries with the largest increase were Germany for England, France for Wales, China for Scotland and USA for Northern Ireland.
Imports
- The value of UK imports increased for all UK countries except Wales.
- There was an increase in annual import value for all English regions apart from the North East, the North West and Yorkshire and the Humber.
- The largest import partner by value for both England and Wales was Germany. For Scotland it was Norway and for Northern Ireland it was Irish Republic.
- The partner countries with the largest increase were China for England, Netherlands for Wales, Singapore for Scotland and Germany for Northern Ireland.
