The Indians have dramatically fortified their bullpen as they look to further pad their lead on the American League Central, announcing on Sunday morning the acquisition of left-hander Andrew Miller from the Yankees in exchange for outfield prospect Clint Frazier, minor league left-hander Justus Sheffield and minor league right-handers Ben Heller and J.P. Feyereisen.

Miller, 31, has been one of baseball’s most dominant relievers for the third year in a row, but the 2016 season has been arguably his best. He’s pitched to a lights-out 1.39 ERA with a 77-t0-7 K/BB ratio and a 52.9 percent ground-ball rate in 45 1/3 innings. He’s earning $9MM this season and in each of the next two to come — a highly reasonable price for a pitcher that has shown his level of dominance late in games. That he’s controllable for another two campaigns beyond 2016 undoubtedly made this deal more palatable for the Indians, who have a deep enough farm system to make this move without gutting their entire pipeline of prospects. However, the price that looks to have been paid is unequivocally steep, as Frazier is widely regarded as one of the top 25 or so best prospects in the game, and Sheffield has worked his way onto a number of top 100 rankings as well.
While future iterations of the Indians may suffer down the line if Frazier and Sheffield reach their ceilings, Cleveland holds a 4.5 game lead over the American League Central division and has definitively announced itself to be in win-now mode. Cleveland reportedly had an agreement in place with the Brewers to acquire Jonathan Lucroy, but that move was blown up when Lucroy exercised his no-trade clause to nix the deal. Whether or not the Indians can pull off another major acquisition, they have filled one clear need on their roster with a top-of-the-market upgrade as they push to capture their first World Series title since 1948.
The Yankees, meanwhile, have seemingly become reluctant deadline sellers, now trading two-thirds of what was one of the most dominant late-inning trios Major League history. Dellin Betances will step into the ninth inning for the Yankees, who have parlayed their investments in Miller and Chapman into a slew of intriguing prospects. The Yankees’ farm system is now teeming with top-tier talent, positioning them well for the future either by allowing them to develop a number of core young players or put together a package for controllable, impact talent at the Major League level.
Frazier, 21, is one of the game’s most highly touted outfield prospects and draws rave reviews for his exceptional bat speed. He was recently promoted to Triple-A after hitting .276/.356/.469 with 13 homers and 13 steals in 391 plate appearances against much older competition at Double-A Akron. He rated 21st on Baseball America’s midseason list of the game’s top 100 prospects, 24th on MLB.com’s same version of that list, 26th on Baseball Prospectus’ midseason top 50 and 34th on Keith Law’s midseason top 50 at ESPN.com. He’s playing center field right now, but he may have to eventually move to a corner spot, where his bat will still play. Frazier draws positive reviews for his plus raw power and improving plate discipline. His walk and strikeout rates have improved significantly since his debut in pro ball, and given the fact that he’s already in Triple-A, he could be an option for the Yankees as soon as next season if his development doesn’t stall at the top minor league level.
Sheffield, 20, is currently holding his own against much older competition in the Class-A Advanced Carolina League. He’s worked to a 3.59 ERA with 8.8 K/9 against 3.8 BB/9 with a 45 percent ground-ball rate in 19 starts this season, spanning a total of 95 1/3 innings. Cleveland selected Sheffield with the 31st overall pick in the 2014 draft, and he currently rates 69th on BA’s midseason top 100 and 95th on MLB.com’s version of the list. Sheffield’s fastball has some sink to it and sits in the 92-93 mph range, occasionally reaching as high as 96 mph, per MLB.com. He’s a bit undersized at 5’10”, but most scouting reports on Sheffield peg him as a potential mid-rotation starter with a potentially plus curveball and a developing changeup.
Both Heller and Feyereisen could help the Yankees’ bullpen in the near future, tweets MLB.com’s Jim Callis. Heller rated as the Indians’ No. 30 prospect, per Callis and colleague Jonathan Mayo, He’s currently pitching at Triple-A after posting a dazzling 0.55 ERA with 12.7 K/9 against 2.8 BB/9 in 16 1/3 Double-A innings to open the season. The 24-year-old Heller has had continued success since moving up a level, logging a 2.49 ERA with a 25-to-7 K/BB ratio in 25 1/3 innings. Heller’s fastball sits in the upper 90s and can touch 100 mph, and his slider draws above-average reviews from Callis and Mayo. The 23-year-old Feyereisen is currently pitching in Double-A, where he’s compiled a 2.23 ERA with a 56-to-20 K/BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. Though he’s averaged 4.5 walks per nine innings this season, control hasn’t been a major issue for him in past seasons.

Both of those prospects are in the Indians system, not Houston’s. Miller to Indians, not Astros.
They are going to trade the entire team for prospects now. No way they can get to playoffs without Miller or chapman. I think this is an excellent move even though it hurts a bit now. Later will be incredibly bright for the Yankees. Also, I can see them trying to flip whoever for Chris sale and surprising people.

Cleveland Indians are going all in and I’m scared for them. They could become the next Milwaukee Brewers who went all in when they got CC Sabathia all those years ago and never got it together again.

Actually that was 2008 and the Brewers lost to the Phillies in the wildcard round. The Brewers made it to the NLCS in 2011 when they went all in for Greinke and Marcum. Lost to the Cards!
Brantley was a late bloomer and did nothing special while a Brewer farmhand. You can have all those stiffs like LaPorta back that you gave up for a prime Cy Younger like Sabathia who you rode into the ground like the rented mule he was.

If Frazier and Sheffield are the only return I feel like The Indians got more value in this deal than the Cubs did for Chapman.
The Indians still gave up more than the Cubs did, even if it is only the two players. Frazier and Torres are similar in value, but Sheffield is much more valuable than McKinney and the rest of that package.
I never said the Cubs gave up more I said the get better value. The Cubs only get half a season of Chapman and the Indians are getting 2 more years of Miller.

Miller is a lefty closer. Lucroy isn’t. It’s that simple.
One good thing about going all in with Miller and Lucroy is that both have control for a year or two so you could go always trade them or QO them, especially Lucroy.

Yanks are in full rebuild now boys, this is what we needed! I think many fans will be happy, rebuild a strong foundation.
I don’t think I would call this a true rebuild. They were able to turn a FA to be RP and another elite RP into 3 high end prospects. However, I fully expect them to go after at least one, if not two of Chapman, Jansen or Melancon this off season. In the end, their bullpen will look similar to this season, but they would have added a ton of young prospect talent. Great job by Cashman to extract so much talent for relief arms in a down season.

The other thing to remember is they will still be able to go for it next year too. They gave up the farm for these two trades but they aren’t rentals. I think this was a great way to “go for it” while not potentially crippling the franchise. They can always trade them next year if the team falls apart.

Yeah, but what about the rotations?? On paper both look imposing, but NYY will have a lot of $$$ coming off the books with some formidable guys. I love Benintendi, but Frazier is almost as impressive despite being a ginger.
As a Braves fan, the AL East will be e citing again between those two come 2019 when all the players are in full stride. But you also have to play in FA. I know both these teams have plenty of great prospects, but you cannot deny FA could still play a part. Could Cespedes opt out and be a Yankee next year? Could Hal be clearing payroll for youth and have plenty of money for Harper in 2020?
As it stands right now, I hope for Red Sox fans it is your team. Because the way most (not all inclusive) BOS fans place your prospects so highly, hope they do not flop.

Frazier and Sheffield (plus whatever rounds out Cleveland’s side of the deal) make for a great deal for the Yankees. However, when the details are complete, this will have to be put side by side with the Ken Giles deal to see if Miller was traded for a less/equal/better haul.
Also the Indians farm system isn’t quite as good as the Nationals’. But I agree with your overall point. I’m expecting more moves from the Pirates and am hoping that will help a bit to balance things out.

Great move for both sides. Yankees clearly went for quantity here and it’s a good thing. Cleveland is all in and it would be amazing to see them go all the way to the top.
Heller just debuted on the prospect list at #30 on the mid season update. Feyreisen is also a power RHP reliever. Was surprised he wasn’t added on the new list. However the Indians did have their top 6 picks debut on the updated list. Which shows the Indians are drafting better. Yankees get 4 solid prospects. I believe though Hillman & Mackenzie have a higher ceiling then Sheffield. Plus Sheffield’s height concerned me as well. Yes Hillman & Mackenzie dropped in the midseason update, but there’s always bumps in the road for teenage prospects.
As a Pittsburg pirates fan I am so jealous! They would never ever do this! I know they can’t do this this year but what about last year or the year before? If they would have spent money and cashed in prospects they could have won division last year! The future will never get to Pittsburgh! It’s about years of control and money!
I said this last week that both miller and chapman should be dealt. when you aren’t close to winning and have key trade chips you move them. the yanks also can look at the division. Toronto and Baltimore are built to compete the next 2-3 years but after there isn’t much prospect capital. the yanks now have a roster that conceivably could compete for the division in 3-4 years.
Excellent move for the Yankees! Frazier will help them get younger and could be ready to help their team by early next season at the latest. Its an overpay by Cleveland, but Frazier is going to be blocked as their OF is set with Brantley, Naquin, and Zimmer.

This is a monumental haul for the Yanks. Anytime you can get two of an organizations #1, #2 or #3 prospect is a big deal. For a reliever, is a really good baseball move for the Yanks. Miller is the best so hopeful this pays dividends for the Indians. I would like to see that as an outside fan.
Yanks are building a war chest unlike anything I can remember. They have 5 or 6 of the top 50 prospects in baseball and 7 in 100. Plus this doesn’t include Severino who was regarded as a top 50 himself last season and he hasn’t pitched much in the majors yet. He has looked awesome back at AAA so factor that in, along with the $80mm come off the books this season and next and wow, Yanks are positioning themselves very well.
These prospects will become bums playing in NY, so…

Good trade for both teams though the Yankees went for numbers over guaranteed quality. Frazier looks to develop into a solid MLB player. He doesn’t look like the stud CLE hoped he was going to be.Sheffield is the best of the bunch and has been very good at A/A++ ball. The other two guys look to be decent bullpen arms down the road. The Yankees free up more payroll. I see polls asking who won the trade. 73% said the Yankees in the poll I saw. Baseball has become a game of potential. I don’t root for either of these teams but how can anyone at this point say the Yankees won the trade?? Miller is one of the top three relievers in baseball. It appears the Indians gave up a good package of prospects but who knows until they develop. Bunch of geeks who literally care more about potential than winning.
There are some fans out there who actually would rather have prospects over elite MLB players, it’s quite humorous.
