Five-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan has been beaten 4-3 by world number 70 Chris Wakelin in the third round of the English Open.

O'Sullivan went into the tournament in Manchester off the back of losing the final of the European Masters against Judd Trump in a thrilling encounter.

He took a 2-0 lead against Wakelin before allowing his opponent to win the following three games to take a lead in the best of seven match.

O'Sullivan came back into it to win the sixth but Wakelin kept his composure to secure a memorable victory.

Earlier O'Sullivan had told BBC Radio 5 Live that because there were so many tournaments at the moment he was not too concerned whether he won or lost.

"You've got so many tournaments, it's not really a bad thing if you lose," O'Sullivan said.

"It's like a bus, you know there's going to be one quickly coming along.

"You just think well, that's a few days off and then you've got one the next week.

"So it was a win-win situation for me, I didn't really care if I won or lost.

"I know it might sound quite strange, but that's just how it feels."

Elsewhere, Judd Trump beat Martin Gould 4-1 to progress to the last 16.

Trump, who came from 2-0 down to beat Jamie Bodle 4-3 in round two late on Wednesday night, found himself a frame behind early on after Gould put together a break of 115.

However, Trump reeled off the next four frames on the bounce to progress to the last 16, where he will face either Mark Williams, who beat Ian Preece 4-1.
