[Video] How Yang Hyun Suk Went from Being Dirt Poor to YG CEO

2012.05.23 20:11

As the creator of Big Bang and 2NE1, Yang Hyun Suk is automatically assumed to be a very rich man, but as enews went through his history, the facts turned out to be a bit different.

The May 22 broadcast of E news showed that through Seotaiji and Boys fame, Yang Hyun Suk earned at least 3 billion won (~2.5 million USD), and was able to move into a nice house with his parents after growing up in a dark basement during his childhood.

However in 1996, Seotaiji and Boys broke up after four years of activity, shocking the entire nation with its sudden disbandment.

Following after, Yang Hyun Suk created Yang Goon Company, creating the new group, Keep Six. Unfortunately, Keep Six was no match for Young Turks Club, which was ironically produced by fellow Seotaiji and Boys member, Lee Juno.

After the failure of Keep Six, Yang Hyun Suk fell into a debt of about 3 billion won, but he didn’t give up just there.

He changed his company’s name to YG Entertainment and achieved success with his first hip-hop duo, Jinusean. Soon he created 1TYM, Se7en, Big Mama, Gummy, Big Bang and 2NE1, making YG Entertainment one of the biggest entertainment companies in Korea.

On his singers′ success, Yang Hyun Suk said, “We are people who help them, not create them.”

With the overwhelming success of company, Yang Hyun Suk has earned around 167.9 billion won (~144 million USD) in 2012 according to LIG Investment & Securities. As of May of 2012, he has made around 216.7 billion won (~185 million USD), earning more than Lee Soo Man and Bae Yong Joon.

Not only that, Yang Hyun Suk was able to secure several buildings in the Hongdae area through smart property investments.

After turning into a dance maniac in eighth grade, Yang Hyun Suk has gone through tough times but through that one passion, he was able to keep aiming for his dreams, bringing him to where he is today.
