Netflix to Make its First Original Colombian Series

Executive produced by Ciro Guerra, co-produced with Dynamo

Netflix is wading deep into the Amazon to make its first original Colombian series. To be executive produced by Oscar-nominated Ciro Guerra (“Embrace of the Serpent”), the still-untitled series is based on an original idea by Diego RamÍrez Schrempp and Jenny Ceballos of Colombian powerhouse shingle Dynamo. Production is slated to begin summer 2018. The series will debut exclusively on Netflix worldwide in 2019. The eight one-hour series will be shot entirely in 4 K and produced in partnership with Dynamo.

Series tracks a young detective and her partner who travel deep into the Amazon, on the border of Brazil and Colombia, to investigate a series of bizarre murders. They soon realize that there’s more intrigue to the jungle than the homicides, as they come across a mysterious indigenous tribe with an extraordinary secret that they will go to great lengths to protect.

“We are thrilled to be launching our first Colombian original, featuring great Colombian filmmakers and producers,” said Erik Barmack, VP of International Originals. “From 2011, we have been committed to providing a great service in Colombia, and this show, with local talent, will add to our incredible slate of originals throughout Latin America.”

Dynamo provided production services to the first three seasons of Netflix’s biggest hit series, “Narcos,” a Gaumont Int’l TV co-production, and to Netflix-Story House series “El Chapo,” which shot in Colombia.

“This is a great opportunity to expand the reach of our local stories and share them with global audiences,” said Guerra. “Netflix is an extraordinary platform that we are thrilled to collaborate with and we think this new show will be a great first step in that direction,” he added.

Carlos Contreras, brother of Mexican director Enrique Contreras, whose writing credits include series “El Chapo,” Sundance film fest-winning movies “Blue Eyelids” and “I Dream in Another Language,” is a co-creator and head writer.

The series will showcase the country’s geographic diversity and magnificent landscapes, as well as the region’s complex social and environmental climate.

The new series joins a growing slate of original Netflix productions being filmed in Latin America, including “Ingobernable,” “Club of Crows,” “La Casa de las Flores,” “Edha,” “Samantha!,” “O Mecanismo,” “O Matador,” “3%” and “Coisa Mais Linda,” among others.

Founded in 2006, with offices in Colombia, Mexico, New York and Spain, Dynamo has produced such hits as “The Hidden Face” and “Undertow,” and provided production services to such high-profile projects as Tom Cruise-starrer “American Made” and Patricia Riggen’s “The 33.” Dynamo is led by CEO/producer Andres Calderon and producers Cristian Conti and Diego Ramirez.
