SHINee's Jonghyun Laid to Rest In Private Ceremony

The K-pop star's funeral service was led by his family and the other members of SHINee.

Korean singer-songwriter Jonghyun, a member of the popular boy band SHINee, was laid to rest on Thursday (Dec. 21).

Born Kim Jonghyun but known by his given name, the K-pop star died on Monday by suicide. He was mourned by family and friends, with the four surviving members of SHINee taking a prominent role in the funeral services.

Along with his mother and sister, members of SHINee and Super Junior, a senior act signed to the same Korean entertainment label, participated in the funeral procession; Super Junior's Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, and Donghae served as pallbearers.

Memorial services took place earlier this week at Asan Medical Centre in Seoul, and was followed by the private funeral service on Thursday.

Fans around the globe commemorated the star's passing on social media and at local memorial services, while SM Entertainment, SHINee’s label, also organized a venue where Korean fans could go to mourn the K-pop idol.

On Thursday, SM Entertainment released a statement thanking everyone who has shown support for those grieving the loss of Jonghyun.

"Today, we warmly and peacefully sent off our beloved artist Jonghyun," it began, and then thanked the people who expressed their consolation to the star's family, SHINee, and all of SM's staff and artists. "Jonghyun's final path was not lonely thanks to so many people's love and comfort. Jonghyun's music and passion, and all of the exceptional sides that he showed as an artist, will be in our hearts forever."

The SHINee member's passing came just days after the artist held his final solo concert series in Seoul on Dec. 9-10. He was 27-years-old.

Following his death, Dear Cloud’s Nine9 revealed a note penned by the deceased star in which the SHINee member graphically described his struggles and expressed his final goodbye. "I'm broken from the inside,” wrote Jonghyun. “The depression that has slowly nibbled me away has now devoured me, and I couldn't overcome it."

Since his career began in 2008 with SHINee, Jonghyun was a prominent vocalist in the Korean music industry. In recent years, he became recognized as one of the K-pop scene’s most prominent burgeoning songwriters, and also released several solo albums in addition to his near-decade as a member of the quintet.
