K-pop star Jonghyun passed away Dec. 18 of a suspected suicide.

The death of K-pop star Jonghyun vaults the late SHINee member onto Billboard's Social 50 chart at No. 2.

Jonghyun died Dec. 18 in Seoul, South Korea, of a suspected suicide.

The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia and Tumblr. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views and engagement. The latest chart's tracking week ended Dec. 21.

(The new Social 50 chart is dated Jan. 3, marking a rare Wednesday-dated chart, instead of the usual Saturday, as Billboard is adjusting how it dates its charts and magazine issues.)

Jonghyun debuts at No. 2 with 425,000 Wikipedia views, a boost of 17,974 percent, according to Next Big Sound. The singer was also mentioned 87,000 times on Twitter, up from 3,000 the previous week (ending Dec. 14).

SHINee, the K-pop boy band that he helped form in 2008, also debuts on the Social 50, at No. 4. The group earned 257,000 new Twitter followers in the tracking week and received 216,000 Wikipedia views, up 3,318 percent. The group announced Jonghyun's death with a Dec. 18 tweet that included a photo of the singer behind a microphone.

"Forever, he will be remembered," a portion of a note on the photo read in Korean.

Jonghyun released one full-length solo album in addition to his work with SHINee and K-pop project SM the Ballad.
