World Best Selling SUV 2017. The top in the 2017

World Best Selling SUV Toyota-RAV4_Hybrid_EU-Version-2016

World Best Selling SUV after the first nine months of the year is back, after two-year, the Toyota RAV4, the car that in 1994 started the era of this kind of vehicles. Rav4 has overtaken the previous leader, the Honda CR-V, penalized by late arrival of 5th generation in Japan.

In the first nine months of the year, Global Car Passenger’s market grew up 2.4% at 58.7 million units. The SUV segment (including all size of cars) has been the only growing segment at global level, up a robust 12.0%, with 21.6 million sales, representing the 36.8% of total market.

The best-selling model this year is the Toyota RAV4, able to overtake the archrival Honda CR-V during the year with actual sales at 608.000 units (+13.8%). Launched in the 1994, this was the real first compact crossover SUV. Understanding demand for a new style of car, the Japanese company designed designed a new style car for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the maneuverability and fuel economy of a compact car. For many years has been the top seller in the segment, but between 2014 and 2016 had lost the leadership in favor of the Honda CR-V. Temporarily.

In second place the former leader, the Honda CR-V, with 545.000 units, down 4.0%. Introduced in the 1996, initially only in Japan, the CR-V was developed across 5 generations, with the last introduced in the 2017 utilizing the same Honda compact global platform introduced on the 10th generation Civic. 2017 sales has been penalized by the hiatus in the domestic market, when the car was introduced just in November.

In third place, the fast growing Volkswagen Tiguan, up 3 spots, selling 509.000 units (+40.7%). Manufactured since 2007, the Tiguan ‘s sales had been boosted by the introduction of the 2016 second generation, distributed in 150 markets.

Down the podium the Hyundai Tucson with 447.000 units (-5.6%) followed by the Nissan Qashqai, up 2 spots, with 377.000 sales (+14.3%) and the Great Wall Haval 6, down 1 spot and 6.7% with 348.000 sales.

The American version of Nissan X-Trail, the Nissan Rogue, ranks in seventh place with 332.000 sales, up 21.2% and 4 spots. While adding its sales with those of the X-Trail (9th with 311.000 units) the model would be the Number 1 with a total of 644.000 sales and we do not understand why Nissan Corporation has decided to have two different nameplates.

Losing a huge 17.3%, the Kia Sportage ranks 8th  with 319.000  ahead of the Mazda CX-5 with 300.000 (+11.0%).
