CAN'T GO GREEN ON SATURDAY

CAN'T GO GREEN ON SATURDAY
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Monday, December 23, 2002, 12:00 AM

Green Bus Lines Inc.

's only Saturday express bus service in Queens will be discontinued in the new year. Under the direction of the city Department of Transportation, which administers the franchise route, the QM15 will make its final Saturday runs this week. The bus, known as the "Shopper's Special," now picks up passengers at 10 a.

m. at 157th St. and Cross Bay Blvd. in Lindenwood, then delivers passengers in Manhattan at 34th St. and Third Ave. The bus makes a return trip at 4:30 p.

m. Last week, the DOT announced it would no longer fund weekend express bus service in 2003. No Sunday service is offered for the QM15. "As part of the budget negotiations and budget processes, the weekend services for all the companies will be canceled," said Tom Cocola, spokesman for the DOT. Theater and shopping Phyllis Silvestri of Howard Beach said she relies on the QM15 to travel to Manhattan on Saturdays to go to the theater and to shop. "Where we live, you have to take at least one bus and the subway. We're really stuck here," said Silvestri, a senior citizen. "It's the convenience of going door-to-door without changing around. That's the big thing.

" The DOT also has ordered Queens Surface to drop four of its weekend express bus routes, all of which take passengers from Queens to midtown. The routes are the QM4 in Kew Gardens, the QM2 in Bayside, the QM1 in Glen Oaks and the QM1A at North Shore Towers. Five of the city's seven private bus lines with weekend express service will experience cuts throughout the city next year, Cocola said.
