Wilson's first visit to the table saw him conjure up a superb long pot to sink a red, bringing to mind comments from world number one and now Eurosport analyst Mark Selby prior to the session that Wilson feels he can pot any ball on the table at any time.

He went on to compile a break of 79 which was cut short in comical fashion with a horrid miscue on the black seeing the cue ball jump over the intended target and out of the table, almost hitting a TV camera. With the frame won for a 12-5 lead, the match was paused for a prolonged as Wilson examined his tip.

The world number nine carried on with visible damage on his cue tip and battled through the final frame, to clinch it on the last black and reach his third straight World Championship quarter-final.

A break of 63 gave Wilson a three-frame lead but Jones responded well with breaks of 80 and 83 seeing him take two of the next three frames to close in at 7-5.

Although his break-building wasn’t particularly stellar, Wilson was ruthless enough as he took the next four frames to establish a dominant advantage going into the evening session when the match will play to a finish - first to 13 frames.
