Northwest Energy Innovations’ 20kW half-scale prototype Azura wave energy device has been connected to the Hawaii grid.

The device is sited at the US Navy’s Wave Energy Test Site in Kaneohe Bay on Oahu.

Azura is claimed to be the first grid-connected wave energy device producing power in North America to be validated by a third party—the University of Hawaii.

The Oregon company expects to conduct open-ocean testing for a year while interconnected to utility Hawaiian Electric.

NWEI plans to install a full-scale 500kW to 1MW Azura machine in late 2017 at the 80-metre berth, funded in part by a $5m US Department of Energy grant.
