25 September, 2017. Samoa – Members of the Samoa Police Service now have a greater understanding and awareness of the needs of the Deaf community in Samoa thanks to a training workshop carried out by the Deaf Association of Samoa.

Part of the program for the commemoration of International Week of the Deaf, the Ministry of Police participated in a deaf awareness and sign language training today – a historic first for the Ministry.

The theme for the week is “Full inclusion with sign language”.

According to the organisers, the hope is that police will now have a “basic understanding and awareness of how to communicate with persons who are deaf, when they seek help from the Ministry of Police.”

The Deaf Society acknowledged with appreciation the support of the Disability Rights Fund, SENESE Inclusive Support Services through the provision of interpreters and Nuanua o le Alofa for the technical support.

Further workshops are planned for this week, including for the Red Cross Society, and for students and staff at the National University of Samoa.
