Brief School History
The need for school in Melkeok was seen by Melkeok citizens as a priority. Immediately after the war, the people of Melkeok went to Peleliu where they obtained several quonset buildings, which they brought to Melkeok. They built a two story building that housed four classrooms. They immediately began school utilitizing those who came from the Japanese schools and learned Math and other skills that were taught during the Japanese time. The first classes that were taught were math, English, Island Family and Science. The students also learned Physical Education and played volleyball, softball, wrestling and athletics. There were several contract teachers who helped the school when it started. Tom Hale was the first contract teacher to arrive in Melkeok and taught English and other English related courses.
