CNN Interactive's Timeline is our effort to document in depth, detail and with perspective the stories that altered the course of nations, changed peoples' lives and marked a momentous passage in our history. The Rabin assassination, the Bosnian conflict, the Million Man March -- these were some of the extraordinary happenings since we launched in August 1995, and we dedicated special sections to these events. The federal government
shuts down--again

December 18: WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Efforts to end the partial government shutdown before the work week begins failed Sunday as budget negotiators failed to reach an agreement. The result: approximately 260,000 federal workers will stay home Monday until a new stop-gap resolution or a permanent budget is signed into law.

With the stroke of a pen, peace comes to Bosnia

December 14: PARIS (CNN) -- A somber ceremony marked the official beginning of peace in the Balkans Friday as the presidents of Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia signed a treaty to end three and a half years of war.

November 14: WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The White House ordered the government to shut down Tuesday morning, temporarily dismissing hundreds of thousands of federal workers without pay.

Israeli prime minister assassinated

November 4: TEL AVIV, Israel (CNN) -- Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated at a peace rally Saturday night in Tel Aviv's Kings Square, a top aide confirmed. He was reportedly shot in the arm and back by a Jewish man in his mid-20s who is allegedly affiliated with right-wing extremist groups.

The million man march

October 16:WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Hundreds of thousands of African- American men came to the Washington mall -- some searching for meaning, some to make personal statements. There may have been as many messages as there were participants.

The People vs. O.J. Simpson

October 3: LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Orenthal James Simpson is a free man. He was acquitted Tuesday in the brutal stabbing murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, outside her luxury townhouse on the night of June 12, 1994.

Terror in the heartland

April 19: OKLAHOMA CITY (CNN) -- The following is taken from a 911 call on April 19 in Oklahoma City: "We just had some kind of explosion downtown. About a third of the building has been blown away."
