Metro, responding to demand for earlier subway service, will start opening its doors at 5:30 a.m. weekdays beginning July 1.
The starting time, 30 minutes earlier than today's, is expected to add 670,000 trips to the Metro in the first year of the expanded service. That expansion was approved by the Metro board yesterday when it adopted a $537.6 million operating budget for the year beginning July 1.
The budget for both bus and rail systems is financed with a combination of fares and subsidies. While board members approved the growing budget without increasing fares, they left open the possibility that they will do so. However, Metro's cumbersome processes have historically required months of negotiations and public hearings before fare increases have been enacted. …
