Sensor Coating Systems launches new national aerospace project with NATEP and some leading international players

London/Dagenham, 23rd August 2018

SCS and NATEP (National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme) alongside with other partners – NASA, Pratt & Whitney, Monitor Coatings, MAN Energy Solutions SE and UTRC – have launched the project ‘CoAtings for Ultra high Temperature detectION’ (CAUTION).
The project will assist in developing a pioneering temperature mapping technology enabling the production and operation of more fuel efficient jet engines and gas turbines. This will help to reduce CO2 emissions, will reduce fuel costs and hence will be in line with the long-term strategic goals of the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) in the UK.

CAUTION will push the boundaries for the Thermal History Technology to new levels for the aerospace industry. This project aims to enhance the temperature range of the Thermal History Coating in order to provide better results to end-users in the aerospace industry.
High level objectives are the optimisation of the sensing material and coating manufacturing, improving high temperature measurement accuracy at extreme temperatures and test the durability of the ‘memory coatings’ on dedicated test rigs and gas turbines. The project involves companies participating in the entire supply chain; from technology provider and coating manufacturer to the end user. This approach enables the development towards specifically defined target areas and assures a market pull for the technology.

The drive for higher fuel efficiencies and a reduction in CO2 emissions sees the requirement for higher operating temperature in combustion engines. This, however, requires more sophisticated component designs and a rapid temperature assessment capability during the testing phase. One of the benefits of the SCS system over conventional methods is the ability to use automated and objective readout methods delivering high resolution temperature maps across large and complex surface areas. Another significant factor is the non-destructive, non-toxic property of the memory material, allowing a much more flexible approach in its application than traditional thermal paint methods and eliminating the requirement for post-test de-contamination or specific safety measures.

Dr Jörg Feist, Managing Director at Sensor Coating Systems said about CAUTION: ‘We are very excited about bringing together these highly prestigious partners. The need for high temperature measurements reflects the ambitions of the industry to achieve set emission targets. We are pleased to welcome Monitor Coatings as a UK supply chain partner joining us in the endeavours to provide advanced sensor coating manufacturing.’
NATEP programme director, Harriet Wollerton: ‘NATEP is a mentoring and grant funding programme targeted to enable technology development in small and medium sized companies in the UK. This project has significant interest from global leaders in turbine technology and is based on a truly exciting technology developed in Britain.’

About SCS
Sensor Coating Systems (SCS) provides a unique luminescence-based sensing technology which enables engineers to record past temperatures on previously inaccessible components. The temperature measurement capability reaches from around 150°C to 1400°C and will be pushed further under this project. This makes the technology very useful for the evaluation and design of mission critical components in harsh environments such as gas turbines or internal combustion engines.
Sensor Coating System Limited spun out of Southside Thermal Sciences an Imperial College London spin-out itself and is privately funded. SCS has relocated from Imperial College to Dagenham, London, in 2016. The larger facilities support activities in the aerospace, power generation and automotive area for an international customer base.

About NASA
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an independent agency of the executive branch of the United States federal government responsible for the civilian space program, as well as aeronautics and aerospace research. NASA’s vision is to “reach for new heights and reveal the unknown for the benefit of humankind”. NASA is helping transform aviation by developing advanced technologies for revolutionary aircraft shapes and propulsion, and for the airspace in which they fly, which dramatically improve efficiency, reduce noise and maintain safety in more crowded skies.
