Lebanese Ambassador to Korea Jad Saeed El-Hassan died in a car accident on Thursday.
El-Hassan was traveling through a tunnel from Itaewon, Seoul at around noon when his car hit the one in front and careened into the wall. He was taken to hospital but died of his injuries. The two passengers of the other car were treated for injuries.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident, including whether the ambassador was driving under the influence or speeding. The diplomat was driving himself and was alone in the car, a police spokesman said.
El-Hassan was involved in a hit-and-run accident in September last year, when he hit a car that was waiting for a left-turn signal in front of the Capital Hotel in Itaewon but fled to the embassy.
He evaded prosecution due to his diplomatic immunity.
