Bruce Williamson is the U.S. Charge d’Affaires in Bolivia.  Prior to his December 2017 arrival in La Paz, he served from December 2014 to September 2017 as a Deputy Assistant Secretary in the State Department’s Bureau of Human Resources.  In that position, Mr. Williamson oversaw the full range of issues relating to employee relations (including conduct, suitability, and discipline), work-life wellness, personnel evaluation, accessibility and accommodations for persons with disabilities, and recruitment and candidate examination.

A career senior Foreign Service Officer with more than 33 years of experience in the State Department, Mr. Williamson has served as both Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires in Guatemala, Deputy Chief of Mission in Peru, Principal Officer in Monterrey, Mexico and has had overseas postings in Sao Paulo, Brasilia, San Salvador, Oslo, and Kingston (Jamaica).  His previous assignments in Washington D.C., include tours in the State Department’s Bureaus of Economic and Business Affairs, Western Hemisphere Affairs, and International Narcotics and Law Enforcement.

Mr. Williamson holds the rank of Minister Counselor and is an attorney by training.  Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he holds a B.A. from Yale University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and a Master’s Degree from the National War College.  He is member of both the California and Washington D.C. Bar Associations.  During his career at the State Department, he has earned numerous Superior and Meritorious Honor awards.  His foreign languages are Spanish, Portuguese, and Norwegian.
