High population density has led to habitat destruction and poaching; Rwanda’s remaining large mammals are restricted to its protected areas, but the Rwanda wildlife will surprise visitors with its diversity.
The eastern Akagera National Park is where you will find typical savannah species: elephant, antelope of all shape and size, giraffe, zebra, hippo and buffalo together with leopard.
Toward the end of June 2015, Rwanda reintroduced lions to the Akagera National Park after more than a decade of being absent. The five females and two males were donated by Phinda Private Game Reserve and Tembe Elephant Reserve in South Africa.
The two forest parks - Nyungwe Forest National Park and Volcanoes National Park - are home to, predictably, Central African forest specialists.
There are up to 13 species of primate at Volcanoes National Park, an amazing slice of pristine mountain rainforest boasting arguably the best mountain gorilla trekking in the world. Nyungwe Forest National Park on the other hand is home to chimpanzees and huge troops of colobus monkeys, not to mention elusive forest birds of every shape and size. Other forest inhabitants include golden cat, forest hog and many small antelope species.
