Michael Holt, snooker player
Will it go? Does Michael Holt know?

Holt's tough Crucible test

Nottingham snooker star Michael Holt faces a difficult first round match at the World Championships in Sheffield.

Holt faces one of the top seeds, John Higgins, in the opening round. The 28-year-old is philosophical about his prospects saying if he's to win the event it'll be nice to dispose of one of the favourites early on.

He'll be nervous but hopes his experience will hold him in good stead.

"I've been there a couple of times and I get excited about it. It's great to walk from behind that curtain. It's what you practice for as a kid."

The season so far

It's not been the best of season's for Michael Holt although he believes the results don't reflect how well he thinks he's been playing.

Regardless, he believes when he gets to Sheffield form will go out of the window.

"It is different, more special and it's the World Championship at the end of the day. It's got so much history. No matter how bad a season you've had, if you have a good world championship you feel okay."

The Crucible

A few years ago there was talk of the World Championships being taken away from Sheffield. But the venue has remained as the home of the biggest snooker tournament in the world, much to the delight of Michael Holt.

"It's tiny. Back stage isn't big enough. We could fill it twice but as soon as you walk out there as a player you realise why it's held there.

"You can hear people whispering behind you. They can touch you. It creates a unique atmosphere that all the players love."

The game

Michael Holt is scheduled to play John Higgins on Wednesday, 25 April 2007.

Fellow Nottingham player Anthony Hamilton is also in first round action. He's up against Marco Fu.
