The awards were founded by the CIPR Education & Skills group in 2005 to recognise and celebrate the excellent, dedicated professionals in the UK who report on education and skills across all forms of media - at both national and local level.

Special Guest Speaker Mary Curnock Cook, OBE

We are delighted to announce that Mary Curnock Cook OBE will be our special guest at the awards.

From 2010 to 2017, Mary was Chief Executive of UCAS, the universities and colleges admissions service.  Earlier in her career she held executive and non-executive positions in the education, hospitality, food and biotech sectors.

Mary is a non-exec Director at the Student Loans Company and a Council member of the Open University.  She Chairs the Access Project and is a Trustee of National Numeracy and multi-academy trust, United Learning.  She is an investor and/or mentor to a number of edtech entrepreneurs and provides ad hoc advisory services to a number of organisations in the education sector.  She is currently Hon President of the Association of University Administrators.

Mary has an MSc from London Business School and she was awarded an OBE in 2000. She is an honorary Fellow of Birkbeck and Goldsmiths, both University of London colleges, and has an honorary doctorate from the University of Gloucestershire.

Emma began her career in communications at Diageo PLC.

About Guy

Guy has worked in journalism and communications for 15 years. He began his career chasing stories in Portsmouth for a daily newspaper. A two-year spell in the UK Government?s Media Monitoring Unit followed. Since 2007, he has worked in press office, communication, and alumni roles within higher education, including at Oxford University, and Birkbeck, University of London. Projects have taken him to Bangladesh to report on sanitation and to Africa to write about mobile phones. In 2014 he edited Birkbeck?s stakeholder magazine BBK, which won a CASE Silver Circle of Excellence Award. He is passionate about producing podcasts, and has interviewed the FT?s editor Lionel Barber, neuroscientist Susan Greenfield, and politician David Miliband for the Alumni Voices series. He now works as the Deputy Head of Campaign Relations at Oxford University. He read Modern History at Oxford, and studied journalism as a postgraduate at Cardiff University.

Louise Casella is Director of The Open University in Wales, leading the strategic management, development and growth of the OU in Wales and supporting strategic change in the OU across the UK. Prior to joining the OU Louise worked as a consultant and interim manager and assignments included periods at Stirling University, and at Wrexham Glyndwr University where she was Pro Vice Chancellor. Louise?s early career was at Cardiff University, where she held posts as Head of Planning, Senior Executive and Head of the Vice Chancellor?s Office, before becoming Director of Strategic Development between 2004 and 2012.
Louise was born and educated in Cardiff, is a Swansea graduate and is passionate about the opportunities that education and lifelong learning open up for individuals. Her interests beyond work, family and friends are rugby, sewing and drinking wine (though not necessarily all at the same time).

Miranda is Head of External Affairs at Universities UK International. She leads on all aspects of UUKi?s communications strategy including campaigns, stakeholder relations and events.

She joined the team in June 2016 from Communications Management - a public relations and communications consultancy specialising in education ? where she led the Business Education division. Before this she led communications teams at Cass Business School, City University London, and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

Miranda also has experience in consumer PR working with big-brand clients in food, charity and FMCG. She studied drama at the University of Exeter.

Sally is passionate about skills education having spent the last 12 years promoting its value. Prior to City & Guilds, Sally led campaigns for the Learning & Skills Council working on its apprenticeships, train to gain and national skills academy programmes.

Starting out in the arts, she began her PR career working at GCI London and moved to global PR agency HK Strategies where, alongside her skills work, she led CSR and corporate briefs across the retail, travel and logistics industries.
Sally is also a qualified yoga teacher and maintains a passions for the arts.

About Wyn

I am currently Vice-President for Education and Professor of Economics at the University of Sheffield. In my current role I am tasked with leading all matters relating to teaching, learning and the wider student experience including recruitment, widening participation, student well-being, career prospects and outcomes more generally. I also continue to teach and research in economics.

Prior to Sheffield, I was Professor in Economics at the University of Nottingham where I also took on a number of managerial roles in learning and teaching. My research focuses on food economics with particular reference to food prices and inflation and I have undertaken work for Defra, the Commonwealth Secretariat and the House of Lords.
