The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) has today confirmed that a person in Norway has tested positive for coronavirus. The person is healthy.

The NIPH has confirmed that a person has tested positive for coronavirus. The person lives in Northern Norway, is healthy and has no symptoms of coronavirus disease. Following an individual assessment, samples were taken from this person. The person was tested after returning from one of the areas affected by the outbreak in China.

“Analyses of the test performed today show a weak positive result, while a previous analysis was negative. The analyses of the sample shows traces of coronavirus. The method of analysis is sensitive enough to detect inactive viruses,” explains Line Vold, Director of the Department of Infection Control and Preparedness at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

Small risk of infection

“The NIPH considers it very unlikely that the person poses an infection risk to others. To be on the safe side, the person is in quarantine at home and is being followed up by local health services in line with advice from the NIPH,” says Line Vold.

Possible contacts are being traced to ensure there has been no transmission.

Provide advice on further follow-up

The NIPH will advise and assist the municipality with further follow-up.

“The NIPH is prepared to deal with cases of the novel coronavirus in Norway. We have robust infection control measures in place,” says Line Vold.

Among the measures to deal with outbreaks of coronavirus infection are medical follow-up of patients, isolation of people who are sick and follow-up of people who have been in contact with sick people.
