London Transport - Holborn station reconstruction sketches, 1933
Holborn station saw a major reconstruction in 1932/33 - new escalators to replace lifts as well as wholly new Central line platforms to allow direct interchange between it and the Piccadilly line. As part of this a new entrance was constructed doing away with the original 1906 Leslie Green elevations. The building regulations for Kingsway always demanded a certain non-standard 'look', to match the adjoining buildings, with stone rather than terracotta being demanded on the original building. Here Charles Holden adds one of his facades within the shadow of the original arches.
This elevation survives to this day, albeit with minor changes, and the roundel forming part of the fenestration is still a powerful symbol.
