Seo Ju-hyun delves into her darker side: Girls’ Generation member becomes an ‘iron lady’ after hard times

테스트

[HANSHIN ENTERTAINMENT]

It’s been a year since actor Seo Ju-hyun embarked on her new career after she left SM Entertainment, and it seems like she’s just as capable an actor as she was a singer.

With the recently finished MBC drama series “Time,” which aired from July 25 through Sept. 20, Seo successfully fulfilled her role even after her partner Kim Jung-hyun stepped down midway due to health issues.

Even when tensions rose after Kim refused to link arms with Seo for photos at a press conference prior to the broadcast, Seo managed to keep her cool until the drama ended. It may have been tough for her, but it paid off.

“There were instances that were hard for me to bear, both in and out of work,” said Seo. “But thanks to all that, I’ve become an iron lady. I’m not scared of anything now. I think [hard times are] inevitable, because it’s not like I can avoid them just because I want to. I think they were worth it. I’m just grateful for everyone who watched the drama even in those conditions.”

In an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, Seo talked about her initial career as part of Girls’ Generation and hopes for new opportunities. The following are edited excerpts.

Q. How have you been since the drama finished?

A
. It took me three days to snap out of my character from the drama. It was a character that required a lot of mental energy for me, and made me sick and stuck in bed right afterwards. I think I caught a cold because I used up all my energy.

People are saying that they saw a new side of you. Do you feel so, too?

The idea of acting is taking something fake and making it look real. The biggest question for me was “How can I act out something unreal and make it look real?” I’ve done acting here and there while I was working on other things [as an idol] and didn’t have the chance to solely concentrate on acting. I had a thirst for acting, and my thirst was quenched when I was able to focus on acting with no distractions.

When I first read the synopsis, I knew that it was going to be difficult and that it was going to require all my willpower. I needed to communicate solely with my character, away from everything else. So for the duration of the shooting, I moved out of my parents’ place.

Your partner and male protagonist of the drama, Kim Jung-hyun, dropped out of the shoot midway. How did that affect you?

I received greater responsibility. I realized that if I couldn’t hold myself or do something wrong, then the whole piece could go wrong. So I tried to rule that possibility out entirely. The only things I could think about were “I have to do this well” and “Keep pushing forward.” I acted like I wasn’t affected by anything, but honestly, I was really scared. But the staff and the other actors knew how I felt, and they were very supportive. I finished [this drama] well thanks to them.

How did the other Girls’ Generation members react?

They sent me snacks and [entire] coffee trucks [to cheer me up]. They were worried about me because the piece was really difficult. Hyoyeon even visited me on set. I burst out in tears as soon as I saw her. It was like meeting your mom after not seeing her for a while. I always thought they were like family, but more so these days. They are so precious to me, and they were really helpful in every way.

You performed together with musicians from North Korea. How was that?

It was a once in a lifetime experience. I got the offer out of the blue on the day of the performance. I wasn’t sure why they called me, and I even thought that it was voice phishing.

I talked to my parents about it, and decided that the fact they called me was a sign of trust. I went at it thinking that I was representing Korea. I’m glad it went fine without any troubles. I was really nervous, but my days as a Girls’ Generation member paid off.

It’s been a year since you parted ways with SM Entertainment. How has that been for you?

Counting the training period, I was at SM [Entertainment] for 15 years. There were hardships, but the circumstances [there] were much better compared to other [agencies].

I’m really grateful, because it’s the company that got me to where I am right now. But I feel like I want to go out into the world and experience things for myself. I had a thirst for that. I haven’t found the answer to my questions yet, but I think I’m on the path to finding out.

Will you keep going on as a solo artist? Do you have any plans of coming back as a singer?

I realized that it was hard for me to care about other things while I was working on the drama. I haven’t decided where I want to go yet, but I feel the need for an agency. I’m in between meetings these days.

I’m focused on acting at the moment, but I was initially a singer. I’d like to come back to music one day. I’m working on some songs on my own, but I’m not sure when it will actually come out.
