(...)I definitely do not like the packaging, two discs are overlapping a little on their sides. They should have done it where each disc has their own folder .. folding out, that would not compromise on the size/width of the boxset either if that was an issue. When I received the DVDs from the courier, two discs in each boxset were loose and not in their holders. Although I don't think one can damage the discs too much .. unless you're really really careless. Not sure how it'll be down the line in a couple of years ..
For the price, I expected something better. For example, SG1 boxsets which are almost half the price have much better packaging - single boxes for each disc (5 discs total for whole season, like Due South). Or like 24 where it's a fold out box with each disc having their own holder.
As for the show, there are definitely no complaints there. It's all wonderfully crisp and clear, and no commercials! One gripe, as other reviewers have mentioned is that the pilot isn't released as well. Although I've heard that they now will include it in Season 3 boxset which will be forthcoming later this year. Thought I was getting seasons 1 and 2 as that is clearly what the photo says. Quite disappointed to only get season 1. Would not have paid so much if I knew I was getting only one season.

I was absolutely thrilled when I discovered due South was on DVD. I got season one as soon as I could (I'm saving up for 2 and 3!). I didnt have any problems with the discs and their packaging. I would like to have seen some bonus features and the pilot included but the DVDs are still great without them.

These DVDs are overpriced in the states. I bought mine a lot cheaper at Amazon.ca, the Canadian Amazon store. They're listed for $80 CDN, which makes them about $65 in US dollars, INCLUDING the international shipping. And they got here just as quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique take on the buddy-cop drama
Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2022

Due South was a twist on the cop-buddy drama created by Paul Haggis back in the mid-1990s. It was supposed to just be a two-part TV movie, but when it aired on CBS it got good enough ratings that it was picked up for a regular series run. It starred Paul Gross as Benton Fraiser a tried and true member of the Royal Candian Mounted Police. When his father, also a mountie, is killed he traces the killer to Chicago and enlists the help of a wise-cracking detective, Ray Vecchio, played by David Marciano. Fraiser ends up installed at the Canadian consulate in Chicago, and along with Ray, his wolf, and the hallucination of his dead father (played by Gordon Pinsent) solve crimes with their clashing styles providing hilarity along the way.

The show was very well-written and acted. It had a good blend of action, comedy, and drama. It also served as the big break for a lot of actors that would hit it big after appearing on the show including Mark Ruffalo, Maria Bello, Carrie Anne Moss, Jonathan Banks, Melina Kanakaredes, and Ryan Phillipe. Leslie Nielsen made numerous appearances, and the show would also It also include numerous recognizable character actors including Beau Starr, Dean McDermott.

The first couple of seasons were more of a straight drama with some comedy mixed in. Later in the show's run, it was more of a dramedy, with the comedy being more silly. The first season was almost exclusively a case-of-the-week procedural, but events from prior episodes do get referenced. The season ends with really a three-part series of episodes that are set up earlier in the season when Fraiser regales the other detectives with the story of the love that got away. All of the actors get to show off their acting chops at some point during the season with Marciano's standout episode being "The Deal" in which he confronts the local mob boss who was a spoiled brat that he grew up with as a kid.

The show was definitely not a carbon copy of anything else. While it did have some of the themes that nearly all buddy-cop dramas have it was definitely different. It was one of the only shows that included indigenous people and/or customs (Northern Exposure being the other one that easily comes to mind) on a fairly regular basis, and having the straight-laced, polite, by the book Mountie play off the mouthy cop not adverse to cutting corners worked well. It also had a very good soundtrack. The DVD presentation is okay but does not have any extras. Given, however, that the show does not stream anywhere that I know of, if you want to watch the show, grab the DVD set when you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars How do I explain what a joy this show is?

I became a fan of this show when it aired on the BBC in the nineties and unbelievably found myself enjoying a whole slew of new things that had passed me by as a child years ago. It is an odd series to try and write a synopsis of as I know how off putting it can be to read about a comedy/buddy movie type police procedural with a lip reading wolf or ghostly Mountie!

All I can add to the already plentiful reviews is to say that this is NOT just your average warm hearted, twee, wacky show that takes on many genres without ever excelling at any of them. It is in fact fantastically written, has the most wonderful characters and is filled with moments of genuinely good drama and delightfully self deprecating humour. No matter what the subject matter, it is dealt with in such a way that the complexity of emotions involved never weighs down the tone of the show or makes light of the themes and you come out at the end of each episode with a wide grin on your face.

I have seen this so many times and I still treasure it, it will undoubtedly remain one of my absolute favourites. I laugh each time I watch the show and feel like blabbering on about all the many wonderful things that make it perfect but you can see all that for yourself if you buy it! Thank you kindly...

I always buy old TV series with some trepidation, never really knowing if they are as good as I remember them. Needn't have worried with this series, it's as good as it ever was. Really enjoying watching again, great characters (love the wolf), good stories. Just what's needed to fill an hour. Lots of episodes here so many hours of entertainment. If you enjoyed this the first time around I'd recommend giving it another watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ein Mountie in Chicago Pilotfilm und komplette 1. Staffel
Reviewed in Germany on March 2, 2011
