Roll the Bones tells the story of gambling: where it came from, how it has changed, and where it is now. This is the new Casino Edition. which updates and expands the global history of gambling to include a greater focus on casinos, from their development in European spas to their growth in Reno and Las Vegas. New material chronicles in greater depth the development of casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip and their spread throughout the United States. A new chapter better places Atlantic City's casinos into their correct context, and new material accounts for the rise of casinos in Asia and online gaming. From the first modern casino in Venice (1638), casinos have grown incredibly. During the 18th and 19th century, a series of European spa towns, culminating in Monte Carlo, hosted casinos. In the United States, during those same years, gambling developed both in illegal urban gambling halls and in the wide-open saloons of the western frontier. Those two strands of American gambling came together in Nevada's legal casinos, whose current regime dates from 1931. Developing with a healthy assist from elements affiliated with organized crime, these casinos eventually outgrew their rough-hewn routes, becoming sun-drenched pleasure palaces along the Las Vegas Strip. With Nevada casinos proving successful, other states, beginning with New Jersey in 1976, rolled the dice. From there, casinos have come to America's tribal lands, rivers, and urban centers. In the last decade, gambling has moved online, while Asia--with multi-billion dollar projects in Macau and Singapore--has become a new casino frontier.Reading Roll the Bones, you'll get a better appreciation for how long casinos and gambling have been with us--and what they mean to us today.

Schwartz, an Atlantic City native, began his formal study of gambling history while getting his Ph.D. in United States History from the University of California, Los Angeles; his dissertation considered the rise of casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip within its national context. Since arriving at UNLV in 2001, Schwartz has written or edited six books about gambling. Schwartz is also a regular contributor to Vegas Seven magazine. My name is David G. Schwartz. I originally trained as a historian and have studied gambling, games, and tourism, and recently have shifted my focus to conflict resolution. For now, though, most of my books are about gambling and history, in one form or another.

I first got interested in gambling as a kid growing up in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in the 1970s. Some of my earliest memories are of the classic hotels of the city being imploded to make way for modern casinos with hotel towers that had none of the charm of the original. Despite this early evidence that, perhaps, history might not have the strongest hold over people, I decided to major in it as an undergrad, along with anthropology.

In grad school (UCLA, US History) I had to choose something to write a book-length historical study on, and it had to be something that would contribute in some way to the literature

.

That's when I remembered the questions I'd had about casinos as a kid: Why did they need to blow up those beautiful old buildings to build new ones that didn't look nearly as nice? If people wanted to gamble, why did they have to do it in casinos? With a few questions like that, I was on my way to writing a dissertation about the historical development of casinos.

After I got my Ph.D., I worked in casino surveillance for about a year, then took at job at UNLV directing the Center for Gaming Research. I wrote a great deal about gambling and history in those years, running the gamut from academic articles, material for popular magazines, and books. Other fun jobs I’ve had over the years include casino security, beach cleaner (no, really, and it’s probably the best one), museum security, dishwasher, short order cook, SAT teacher, and Mr. Peanut.

I also teach. In the past I have taught both halves of the United States history survey course and teach a course in casino history. I have developed several honors seminars on topics like jazz history, conspiracy theories, the history of video games, and alternate history. In addition, I do workshops on various conflict resolution and communication topics.

In 2021, I started working as UNLV’s Ombuds, where I apply many of the same principles that first drew me to the study of history—namely, a genuine curiosity and desire to understand. Since then, I have gotten an ombuds certification and mediation credential, and have dipped my toes into scholarly writing about ombudsing and conflict resolution.

Very readable and entertaining book that doesn't skimp on factual information. David Schwartz is the head of the UNLV Center for Gaming Research and we're fortunate to be able to read a lot of his work in the local media. One of the best writers covering the gaming industry and Las Vegas working today.

Interesting for a history major who loves Vegas. (Me). Might be "dry" for many. A lot of time is invested in the expansion of gambling through the centuries in Europe.

This is the best book I’ve ever read on gambling. Incredibly detailed and interesting.

This book is comprehensive and although long, is written in a way which engages the reader. It is refreshing to see a book which looks at gaming as it developed in Europe and other parts of the world. Many books look to closely or only at America. Although the American contribution to gaming is well examined it takes a more worldly view, the end result is a far more complete view of the topic.

This history of gambling is interesting for a few pages but then become repetitive and boring. The book is two or three time longer than necessary harming its readability and enjoyment. Maybe as a reference book.......

Fun to read, this fine work will appeal to anyone interested in gambling or Las Vegas history. Dr. Schwartz strikes a perfect balance between serious and quirky in this delightful book. His heavyweight credentials as a gambling historian come through but are never flaunted for their own sake. Highly recommended!

Roll Them Bones is David G. Schwartz's wonderful account of the history and the impact gambling has made on our lives throughout time. I found this book to be a quick, fascinating, and a entertaining read; it is often difficult to combine so many of these characteristics in one book. Have you ever realized that gambling has been around as long as man has. I found the fact that even monkey's seem to prefer to gamble by their preference in taking chances, rather than going for an action that gets them a set amount of food, whereas the other task would give them a random amount of food which was always less.

Cards, dice, bones, or whatever else was handy, man has always enjoyed games of chance. Historical documentation from the Greeks, the Etruscans, the Eyptians and so much more lays the foundation that forms of gambling have always been popular. Roman emperors were known for enjoying gambling for recreation. Royalty has been known throughout time to enjoy and encourage gambling among the masses.

This is a terrific book as it is an enjoyable read, sprinkled with much historical facts. This historical information isn't given in a format that may be dull, or unexciting, but rather Schwartz does an excellent job of making you want to continue to turn the page. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys gaming, and those who are history buffs, you won't be disappointed.

Great book for a history of gambling from biblical times to the present. A number of typos and printing errors were noticed but did not distract from the read. David does a great job of pulling it all together in an interesting read, as well. Recommended for the gaming student and casual reader.

It concentrates too much on the history of gambling, ranging from 14th century Italy right up to Vegas and online games. Good book, but too specific.

¡Cuidadin!
