This does a great job of covering the history of the war, but adds immensely by including many first-person views from diaries, letters, & reports. These were dug out of many hidden archives, such as local history societties & private collections. It was written in the 1950s and is well recognized as a book very well researched. Other authors actually refer to this in their books, using these original sources included by Scheer & Rankin. OK, so I first read it 50 years ago. I'm still very interested in the Revolution and still find it a fabulous book.

Very readable, fast moving, and uses a lot of first person eyewitness accounts. A bit dated, minor errors but an excellent source none the less.

Unbelievably detailed research on both sides of the Atlantic; an incredible Bibliography; exhaustive documentation and extensive appendices or notes; these are trademarks of this blue ribbon standard of books about the American Revolution.

Both the Brit and Colonial perspectives and interpretations are included and quoted; the Brit and American archives are used to access the personal journals of field officers and commanders.

After having read a dozen or more books about the Am. Rev., my opinion is that this is the blue ribbon standard for research at this time.

Very interesting read. Book didn’t come with the jacket cover and it has that recycled paper format I despise

One of the best first person account snippet collections of the revolutionary war era I have ever read. Have read at least 6 times over the years.
