The author describes the more or less idealistic support for the rebellion among the french upper classes as well as the less altruistic motives of the french government: I.e. to revenge the Seven Years War and weaken the British.
He illustrates the critical importance of the French supplies and money forwarded to the American Revolution but concludes, that France gained very little in return; - only a crushing public debt, which helped to spark the French Revolution.
