Update Your Whispersync for Kindle Settings

Easily pick up where you left off across your Kindle apps and devices. Access your notes and highlights regardless of which device you're using.

Whispersync automatically backs up and saves data from your Kindle devices and apps, including your reading position, notes, and highlights, to Amazon's servers. Saved data syncs with all Kindle apps and devices linked to your account so you always have it readily available. Whispersync also provides certain other features and functionality.

Whispersync is already enabled by default on all Kindle devices and apps. Your device needs to be connected to the internet for Whispersync to work.

If you would like to turn off/on Whispersync, use these steps.

Turn off/on Whispersync on Kindle apps for iOS, Mac, Android, or PC.

  1. Open the Kindle app
  2. Select More
  3. Select Settings
  4. Select Whispersync for Books and confirm whether it’s off or on.

Turn off/on Whispersync on Kindle E-readers.

  1. Select More
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Device Options
  4. Select Advanced Options
  5. Confirm status under Whispersync for Books and Notebooks
  6. Select Whispersync for Books and Notebooks if you would like to change the status.

Turn off/on Whispersync on all Kindle apps and devices linked to your account.

  1. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices
  2. Select the Preferences tab
  3. Select Device Synchronization (Whispersync Settings)
  4. You’ll now see the option to toggle Whispersync Off/On

If you turn off Whispersync, usage data won't automatically save to Amazon’s servers*. Some features are unavailable, including sharing your reading position across devices, and Export/Share for notes. Also, any notes, highlights, or bookmarks made while Whispersync is turned off, may be lost when turning Whispersync back on.

*If you use Kindle Web Reader (read.amazon.com) after turning off Whispersync, all data generated while you use Kindle Web Reader will continue to save to Amazon's servers but won’t sync to your other Kindle devices and apps.
