Interscope Execs Salute Lady Gaga as ‘A Star Is Born’ Soundtrack Hits Sales, Streaming Milestones

Interscope Records top brass paid a special visit to the Jimmy Kimmel Live! set on Wednesday to present newly anointed Oscar winner Lady Gaga with a commemorative plaque. On hand to honor Gaga for achieving 4 million albums sales and over 2 billion streams worldwide for the A Star Is Born soundtrack were Interscope Geffen A&M chairman/CEO John Janick and vice chairman Steve Berman, along with evp Dennis Dennehy, evp of film and TV marketing and licensing, soundtrack Tony Seyler and Gaga manager Bobby Campbell.

Technically speaking, the singer was presented with the plaque during Kimmel by the show’s “parking lot security guard” Guillermo Rodriguez. “Not only are you getting that but Guillermo is going to go to your home and hang it on the wall for you,” joked Kimmel. Watch the clip here:

Gaga sat down with Kimmel just three days after winning best original song, for the ASIB track “Shallow,” at the Academy Awards. During the interview, the singer-songwriter tried to explain how acting works when Kimmel asked about her passionate duet with co-star/director Bradley Cooper during the Oscar telecast — and whether the two were now an item, as fans have pondered.

“First of all, social media quite frankly is the toilet of the internet and what it has done to pop culture is just, like, abysmal,” Gaga said. “And, yes, people saw love, and guess what? That’s what we wanted you to see. This is a love song, ‘Shallow.’ The movie, A Star is Born, it’s a love story.”

She also explained that Cooper essentially directed the Oscar night performance, down to the stage blocking and camera angles. “I knew that he had the vision for how it should go,” she said. “The way that it was shot, the way they pushed the piano out — you saw them put the piano together — us walk up on stage, no intro, that was all him.”

Earlier, it was announced that A Star is Born will return to theaters for a special one-week engagement with 12 additional minutes of footage starting Friday, March 1. Billboard Boxscore also reported Wednesday that Gaga has passed the half-billion mark ($512.3 million) in tour grosses during her career. She is only the fifth woman to hit the milestone, joining ranks with Madonna, Celine Dion, Taylor Swift and Beyonce.
