Middlesex Jail in Cambridge closes

The Middlesex Jail at the Edward J. Sullivan Courthouse in Cambridge closed Saturday after 32 years of operation, according to Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian.

The jail’s 220 detainees were moved to the Middlesex House of Correction and Jail in Billerica over the span of two days, a process that ended early Saturday afternoon, Koutoujian said in a statement.

There are plans to revamp the building into high-tech offices and residential space.

The sheriff’s office worked closely with Governor Deval Patrick and others as a part of this transition, the statement said.

Establishing another jail in southern Middlesex County will be a priority, Koutoujian said.
